Hadn't heard Racer X before but tried it out. Good stuff. An excellent jump start to a morning washed down with strong coffee. Really liked the drum and bass sound. Wish I'd known about them in the 80's. Coulda spared me a lot of time listening to Ratt and the likes.

But, I'm sad to say I went from heavy to mind-numbingly soft.. :-)

The bass player of Racer X plays with the Mars Volta. I am pretty sure he is still with them. Flea played on their first studio album and he was hired to tour. After that he has played on all subsequent albums.

Great choice noddin. I have been spinning Frissell myself...

<b>King-Federal Rockabillys</b>

Excellent if brief overview of some classic rockabilly singles originally released on the King and Federal labels by the likes of Mac Curtis, Charlie Feathers and more. If a quick and easy single disc distillation of this sort of thing is enough for you, this one would be a fine choice. Check out the fuzzy guitar sound on Hank Mizell's Jungle Rock. Here's the tracklist:

1.Mac Curtis - Grandaddy's Rockin'
2.Charlie Feathers - One Hand Loose
3.Joe Penny - Bip A Little, Bop A Lot
4.Ronnie Molleen - Rockin' Up
5.Mac Curtis - Little Miss Linda
6.Charlie Feathers - Bottle To The Baby
7.Mac Curtis - Goose Bumps
8.Mac Curtis - If I Had Me A Woman
9.Charlie Feathers - Everybody's Lovin' My Baby
10.Hank Mizell - Jungle Rock
11.Bill Beach - Peg Pants
12.Mac Curtis - Say So
13.Charlie Feathers - Nobodys Woman
14.Bob And Lucille - Eeny Meeny Miney Mo

<b>The Compact 2 Tone Story</b>

Hard to go wrong with every a and b side of every single on the 2 Tone label. The Specials, Selector, Madness, English Beat, Bodysnatchers...all the familiar faces and more are here with even a guest spot with Elvis Costello with his one single on the label. Oddly enough, former label head and Specials founder Jerry Dammers was less than impressed, saying "It's real train spotters stuff with every B-side from every free single and I wasn't even consulted about it. In some ways that (The Compact 2 Tone Story) is the worst." Regardless, a great collection filed with excellent stuff.

<b>Lili Boniche & Bill Laswell: Boniche Dub</b>

Taking as its source the album Alger, Alger by Arab-Occidental-Jewish singer-guitarist Lili Boniche (discovered playing in a Paris café at age 78), Boniche Dub is producer Bill Laswell's ambient pastiche of pan-Andalusian-Algerian textures and beats. Excellent if you have a need for something spacey and bass heavy. particularly good for late night listening.

Actually the 3 LP set here is a bit of overkill. None of it is really bad, but a lot of it is covers and there is not a lot of variation to it as it is all the early stuff on Laurie. Really, any early hits collection would suffice. I just happened to happen along the vinyl here cheap and it's a fun listen. If you want to find something a bit different in the Dion catalog, look to an album he did in the mid 70s with Phil Spector. Spector is in fine form with the arrangements and Dion's voice is very good. Album is quite a bit more on the downer side than what was expected of either of them and it was shelved upon release and only released in England initially. People wanted to remix it but Spector was adamant it shoudl remain as is. A really interesting listen:

You might like UK Decay or maybe Southern Death Cult (before they turned into The Cult).

I'd suggest checking out some American death rock stuff, 45 Grave, first Christian Death album (the one where Rik Agnew from The Adolescents played guitar). A bit more raw and rough but as far as walking the line between punk and goth they fit the bill.

There's also Birthday Party stuff.

Oh yeah, no doubt. I actually like some 80s stuff from all three of those groups, but yeah, The Damned and The Stranglers are probably two of the prime examples of bands whose punk legacies can be really confusing if you start at a random point in their discographies.

Sufjan Steve's The Age of Adz is definitely growing on me.

I've probably spun this record about 10 times in total since I got it - and I just keep liking it more and more. It helps now that I have speakers that will go low enough to really give the electronic low end its due.

This album is very different than anything I've heard in a while. A great combination of electronic, acoustic, and just plain creativity.

Speaking of Ratt...are there some great sounding 80's hair band albums? Most of the CD stuff is too treble heavy and just sounds awful. I grew up with cassettes, but wonder if vinyl is superior and if any really stand out on quality.

To this day I've never heard a song off Van Halen's OU812 that sounds even decent quality.

I'm trying to listen to music more often. Currently spinning a home made cd with tracks from Dark Night of the Soul and Admiral Radley's I Heart California; Deer Hunter's Halcyon Digest; Decemberists' The King is Dead; Circulatory System's Signal Morning. I've had the Signal Morning for a while but didn't appreciate it until I set up a headphone system in the corner of my son's empty bedroom. (I'm not taking over his room mind you. He'll be thrilled to use the system when he comes home for a visit.)

Oh, I moved on from the new Iron and Wine after about 3 listens. I'm sure I'll return to it though.

Kind of an interesting concept. Not pulled off too well. There's real good songs, a real good band, and some good vocalists. Lots of moments of inspiration but not so many at the same time. Harold Land's West Coast Blues!

Jazzland, a somewhat later offspring of Riverside, did not compete with the parent label as a long term developer of major artists. It's strength was often in taking advantage of one-time circumstances to assemble intriguing combinations of players for "blowing" sessions. This was one classic example: in the spring of 1960, rising star Wes Montgomery was living in San Fransisco and the Cannonball Adderly Quintet--with its Barry Harris/Sam Jones/Louis Hayes rhythm section--was there on a working trip. Harold Land and Joe Gordon, residents of the not too-distant Los Angeles, were imported by visiting producer Orrin Keepnews. The result was the instant meshing of compatible jazz talents.

I tend to like hip-hop influenced sounds rather than hip-hop straight up. However, I've really been enjoying this little bit of noir-ish sounding trip-hop. My frames of reference don't run too deep in this genre... maybe digable planets meets de la sol and then imported from France (its a French group).

Found a video below from the album. The vid's obviously politically tinged. But, what I like more about the album is this sense of (almost romantic) coyness. Some enjoyable vocal guests through out. Not often I find a hip-hop artist and think, "Hey, I gotta go check out more of the guy's stuff!"

If any of you are familiar, recommendations please!

Now playing and why is it when I post pictures it comes up as a file that needs to be opened rather than showing the picture? Geez! I hate all the different file types. JPG is the ONLY one that should damn well be used.

I posted last weekend that I heard this Kid at the Grammy pre-telecast show and how impressive he was. I ordered his latest CD and it came in and WOW, this cd has it all, I would dare to say reference type. not only his Jazz-funk style with sprinkling of rock and New Orleans riffs. The sound mix is bold in your face with a heavy bass line that will exercise your woofers and subs.

snowstorm is moving in...we're to expect 12-16" today! not too cool but I've got a crockpot simmering, some beers chillin', and a decent pile of records piled up to soundtrack the day while I watch muted b-ball...

Been spending a lot of time lately with The Crane Wife lately and whether it's the sparse storytelling reminiscent of the Japanes parable from which it's drawn or the urgency of the vocals, I've really been enjoying it as a whole production. Again.

Been listening to some Chet Baker myself that I seem to have happened across...always good stuff. Also, really digging this lately:

http://www.histylerecords.com/_image/jd-mcpherson/album-jd-mcpherson.jpg (http://www.histylerecords.com/histyle-records-chicago-store.php)
JD McPherson: Signs and Signifiers

This one came out last year but I just heard it and I'm digging it a lot. It's got a great retro rockabilly/soul vibe. As opposed to more than a few things that come out in that realm, this one has some really great playing throughout and is also recorded extremely well on all vintage gear that gives it a great old school sound but not at all lo-fi. Solid vocals and a great backing band. Really well made record. Just a shame it's not out on vinyl, but I guess ya can't have everything.

Hell, as long as I'm pimping this thing, I'll go ahead and toss out the video and here's the blurb from the website:
With a strong singing voice that moves from smooth and sweet, to raw and rockin' on a dime, JD McPherson channels Little Richard, James Brown, Charlie Feathers, to name a few. Hi-Style Records is excited to present the debut release by JD McPherson, Signs & Signifiers! Hi-Style brought JD McPherson up from Oklahoma to the big city of Chicago to record this stellar 12 song, full length album. Produced by Jimmy Sutton (Mighty Blue Kings, Four Charms, Del Moroccos) and engineered by Alex Hall (The Modern Sounds, Del Moroccos), the album also features Sutton on bass and guitar, and Hall on drums and piano. Recorded to an old 1960's Berlant 1/4 inch tape machine, this stellar performance, and brilliant song writing by McPherson, all come together under Jimmy Sutton's impeccable production. This is authentic electrifying rock n' roll/ rhythm & blues with post-structural lyrics and arrangements.

The album also features guest musicians: Scott Ligon, (NRBQ's Terry Adams Rock & Roll Quartet), plays incredibly tasteful piano. Austin's Jonathan Doyle (Nick Curran and the Lowlifes, White Ghost Shivers) and Chicago's Josh Bell (The Del Moroccos) blow killer tenor and baritone saxophones. Susan Voelz (Alejandro Escovedo, Poi Dog Pondering), on violin, and Allison Chesley (Helen Money), on cello, contribute a beautiful string arrangement to the soulful "A Gentle Awakening". Rounding out the album's guests, guitar ace Joel Paterson, (The Modern Sounds) lends some choice guitar work to the Joey Simone classic "Your Love (All That I'm Missing)".

I always know when I'm in some strange head space when I start pulling out Sun Ra. I have to admit that the avant-garde can get too out there for me most of the time. But, the more down-to-earth tunes I nearly always enjoy. They often lack polish, and for me this just makes them sound like the tunes of a happy voyager (sometime clumsily) exploring ways to set the spirit free. Click the album art for 10 minutes of Sun Ra infused happiness via dropbox. (Sky Blues, 320 mp3) or try this (http://holy****ing****40000.blogspot.com/2010/01/sun-ra-disco-3000-flacv0.html), performed live in 1978. In the right headspace I really enjoy going back and forth between the joy and the avant-garde that is the whole 2-CD recording. Someday I'll make myself a comp of the joy from several Sun Ra albums, without the avant-garde, and have it ready for all the other days.

The Wipers - Over the Edge ... See other thread.

Kurt Vile - Childish Prodigy ... I've been listening to Smoke Ring for My Halo too in preparation for his April 2nd show opening for J. Mascis at the 7th St Entry (hambone, you should go), but I keep coming back to his previous effort. Easily my most-listened-to album of 2011 so far if we're going by number of spins.
http://img.amazon.ca/images/I/51DUz8GZFFL._SL500_AA300_.jpg
Jonathan Richman - O Moon, Queen of Night on Earth ... new JoJo; seeing him in Chicago next week and then in Minneapolis again in May. "My Affected Accent" is an instant classic, as is "If You Want to Leave Our Party, Just Go," which could be the anthemic statement of purpose of his 21st century aesthetic.
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_dC7dhbYHDCE/S4zcXRyDQ9I/AAAAAAAAKAM/2UuBhPzdemU/s320/frpic.jpg
Future Islands - In Evening Air ... saw these guys a couple of weeks back. Part of the new wave of theatrical electropop, but not nearly as ridiculous as that sounds. Throbbing bass and textured electronic noise under vocals that are sometimes raw, sometimes sobbing, and always commanding.
http://www.addictmusic.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/James-Blake-Album-Cover-300x300.jpg
James Blake - James Blake (2011) ... straddling the soulful ground between Future Islands-type pop and dubstep. He's moved from primarily sampling vocals from R&B songs to adding his own voice, and it took a little getting used to for me, but the glorious moments on this record are oh so glorious. That shuddering bass on the second verse of his cover of "Limit to Your Love"! Otherworldly.
http://www.albumoftheyear.org/album/covers/this-is-it-and-i-am-it-and-you-are-it.jpg
Marnie Stern - This Is It and I Am It and You Are It and So Is That and He Is It and She Is It and It Is It and That Is That ... still in regular rotation. Seeing her again in Chicago on Wednesday!
http://www.soundstagedirect.com/media/calvin_johnson_sons_of_soil.jpg
Calvin Johnson - Calvin Johnson and the Sons of the Soil ... Never heard this one until recently. "Can We Kiss?" is as good as any of his solo jams.

Joey Pizza Slice - Son of Salami ... sorta Daniel Johnston-esque lo-fi stuff, with layered effects achieved by recording to cassette tape with the eraser head removed. "Cigarettes Make Me Feel Good" and "Pretty Girls Is a Mother****er" are pretty much permanently stuck in my head all day every day.

Betty Everett - There'll Come a Time ... Betty!! My most recent obsession. Forget "The Shoop Shoop Song" and skip straight to "Getting Mighty Crowded", "Is There a Chance for Me", or most sublimely of all, the title track of this LP, which I've just been listening to over and over.

Roy Ellis: The Boss is Back

Solid set from Roy Ellis back after a long, long break of around 20 or more years. The thing kicks off with a pretty great ska track, One Way Ticket to the Moon, all the slow burn simmer and energy of classic ska updated with solid production featuring a great horn section. Then you get The Boss is Back, the title cut where Ellis announces his return and I'm thinking this is just gonna be a classic album. But, after that great opening it does fall off into some fairly generic reggae tunes, a couple soul tracks and a pretty annoying cover of The Rose. Ellis is in fine voice throughout though and another couple really strong numbers keep the album afloat, but it's fairly up and down between really solid new material and fairly generic reggae tunes. Of course, even the standard issue stuff is at least well done and all the heavier ska tracks are excellent. So, if you're into this sort of thing, definitely worth a listen.

The Books: Food for Thought - My first exposure to The Books was last years The Way Out (http://forums.audioreview.com/showpost.php?p=334130&postcount=15). Picked this one up recently and also like it. Actually, I'd strongly recommend it. For me they just find the right balance of keeping the melodies (for lack of a better word) simple enough to be catchy, with eclectic and complex samples to build up the texture and make me want to explore. Just humorous enough to keep from feeling overthought. It's both touching and quirky. The instrumentation and vocals (those that aren't samples) always seem to be just right; they seem to find the right emotion for every collection of sounds surrounding them. I think there's some actual musicianship behind the samples! . I see Pitchfork also gave a review of the album (9 of 10) (http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/854-thought-for-food/). I agree with it. I keep thinking the first track "Enjoy Your Worries, You May Never Have Them Again" should be the sound track for your local Dept. of Motor Vehicles... insurance claims office. I'm not sure. Great stretch of spoken words in the middle of the track. Probably just me that would enjoy the humor.

When: The Lobster Boys - Doesn't quite cast the same spell as Thought for Food. The songs are more composed and more whirling, Whereas The Books seem to organically build songs from collections of samples, When decorates and augments songs with sampled sounds. So, more of a jam feel to When; more rhythms more loops. When uses a bunch of middle eastern tones and harmonies and buzzing percussion which add a nice flair; some even come across a bit Beatle-esqe psychedelia. Still, a fun listen. I think my favorite track is Puff Pipe a heavier grooved, droning middle eastern-styled piece with some industrial crashing noises.

btw, like the House of Tribes album above. Well done and very enjoyable.

That Books album is really good. I also really like The Lemon of Pink from them. The funny thing is that on those first two albums I for a while thought they were good but that just a hint more structure and bringing those noises more into the service of more traditional songcraft would be just about perfect. Then, the next couple albums the band pretty much did just that and in retrospect I find myself going back and enjoying the first two much more than the stuff they fleshed out a bit more. Guess I'm not so smart after all.

You've both convinced me to toss The Lemon of Pink into my Amazon cart. I went on an extensive filesharing binge recently. Filled in some holes, but mostly explored some new sounds. I feel a need to restore some balance to the commercial karma of the bands I like.

Boards of Canada was another band I sampled and will need a few more listens to fully weigh in on. But I'm liking their sound and mentally put them in the same taste category. Not really so much in the found samples category; more in that analog electronica category.

That such a spot on observation. Well, not the referendum on your intelligence. I'll let others arbitrate that. The suspicion that with some structure they'd hit another plane. I think it just highlights how much the whimsy of their stuff is important to the experience.

^ agreed...both of those are excellent. I've been streaming the new Mtn. Goats here and really diggin' it, which makes me happy. I was a huge fan of earlier stuff, the ****ty sounding but beautifully written 4-track stuff he did when he still had a day-job...the official, produced stuff seemed to lose some of the lyrical gestalt for the last few albums. This one is certainly as produced as other recents but something is hitting right...the lyrics are darkly lovely and haunting, poignantly precise enough. and there's a nice level of nuance with handclaps popping up here and there, amazing bass playing! and just all around tasty album.
It's here for the moment... (http://www.npr.org/2011/02/27/134056034/first-listen-the-mountain-goats-all-eternals-deck)

The Tired Sounds of Stars of the Lid

If you like ambient drone music, you should really listen to these guys. I'd probably suggest the more recent Stars of the Lid: The Refinement of Their Decline, but enjoying this one right now and really we are talking fairly small variations between these types of releases. Also, I should mention that Kranky really does produce some well-made vinyl.

Digital remaster of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On?" Which includes the "Detroit" mixes which were very different from the L.A. mixes. Also included are live versions from that D.C. "Marvin Gaye Day" show later that year.

A Todd Rundgren Collection.

Two Collection of R.E.M.s covering from the IRS years onward.

I begin to dig some artists 10 to 20 years after their heyday so I can find out what they're really about.

This is an incredible album...one of the best things I've heard in awhile- some of the mystery of his earlier lyrics, stellar production, cool country vibe with jazzy overtones ala' Astral Weeks-groove, his deep baritone voice that touches on Willie Nelson gravel road-worn-ness...recommended.

Hmmm. interesting. I pulled out his last one "Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle" a little while back and more or less confirmed that it just wasn't as good as I wished it were. I had been hoping he'd put a solid album out again sometime. Sounds like the new one might be it. Thanks!

Jukebox - Music in the Films of Aki Kaurismäki

This is pretty good-- reminds me of Davey for whatever reason although the production is often pretty raw. I picked this up after watching Kaurismäki's Shadows in Paradise and appreciating the way that the soundtrack choices complemented his cinematic sensibility (unflinching but with a certain wryness... tough but affectionate). A 2CD set covering most of his '80s films, mostly a good mix of retro rock 'n' roll, primal blues, and schmaltzy Finnish pop. There's a bit of nostalgia for me too because as a kid we rented Leningrad Cowboys on VHS more than once... I loved it although I probably didn't really get it. Anyway, good for the right mood.

Prince Jazzbo: Ital Corner

Prince Jazzbo was a Jamaican DJ in the 70s, who was generally in the shadow of greats such as U-Roy and I-Roy as well as Big Youth and others. However, this album is pretty fantastic and notable for belong the only DJ record to come out of Lee Perry's Black Ark studios. Scratch fans will recognize some of the backing tracks like the rhythms from Max Romeo's One Step Forward. It also contains a few bits and pieces that were to soon appear on The Upsetters' fantastic Super Ape album. Overall a worthwhile listen and an under-appreciated gem.

Rico Rodriguez: Man from Wareika

Rico is known to many from his work with the Specials, where he played the memorable trombone parts in Ghost Town and their version of A Message to You Rudi. Here he is playing a slew of top notch instrumentals on his own. The rhythms are a mix of jazz inflected ska and reggae and his trombone dominates the proceedings. Pic links you to the original album, but if anyone's really interested I can get you the Japanese reissue that doubles the track list with other tunes recorded at the same sessions in 1976 but not on the original album. There's also a dub version floating around and while I often really like those, in this case I think the dub versions suffer from having too much of Rico's horn stripped out. Still good, in this case I just prefer the full versions.

A couple trivia points to mention. Rico went to the Alpha Boys School in Jamaica and learned trombone from the legendary Don Drummond. Also, this album was the only reggae album to be released on the Blue Note label.

I remember reading about Glenn Branca in the Sonic Youth book "Confusion is Next".

had a long overdue listening session Saturday night:

Yours Truly the Commuter-Jason Lytle
Chutes too Narrow-The Shins
Killing the Moonlight-Spoon
Moon & Antarctica-Modest Mouse
One Foot in the Grave-Beck
Transistor Radio-M.Ward
Pet Sounds-Beach Boys
God Less America-strange C&W compilation

Things got a little fuzzy at the end after sampling a few bourbons. all of the above are on vinyl except for Pet Sounds. I know I listened to more than one cd.

I was almost gonna start a separate thread about hearing The Ascension for the first time just recently. One of those "always heard about it/never heard it" albums... I knew it was influential, but I didn't realize that it was also really good. I listened to it through headphones and I had to resist the urge to jump up and run to tell someone else about what I was hearing several times over the course of the record. That exposure was on a CD that I got from my local library but I just ordered the reissue on 180g white vinyl, which appears to be available here (http://www.fortissimorecords.co.uk/) (it notes that it's limited to 900 copies and I'm not sure how long ago it came out, but it doesn't say anything about it being sold out on the site and they accepted the payment I sent... so we'll see).

Also, really like the lead track off that Charles Bradley album.

I just got the chance to see him in concert (with the Budos Band) and he was sensational. Have you heard his cover of "Heart of Gold"? They're selling a 45 of it at the Daptone online store this month only. There's also a really great acoustic version on YouTube but this one's uptempo with horns and a cubic meter of sweat.

I'll have to look for that cover. Sounds interesting. I saw him with Sharon Jones a couple years back and thought he was interesting but I think he sounds better on record, a lot more powerful anyway. Could have just been an off night for him though, hard to say.

And, if you like The Ascension, you should check out Lesson #1, Branca's debut. Its also got Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore on a track.

New collaboration with Merzbow and Boris together is good too as long as we're talking noise.

Good stuff there in the new Explosions disc. As usual, mastered too loud, but that's the only way it comes. They have a better sounding version of the Feelies disc available in 24/96 download. Hopefully more companies will adopt this practice, give the masses the crappy sounding CD/MP3, then make the master available to audio lovers without all the compression and limiting. Kind of like Hear Music did recently with the excellent sounding George Harrison All Things Must Pass 24/96 download, and some of the McCartney releases, among others.

That would be amazing! The Soul Bros rip is excellent quality. You are spinnin some serious stuff Dave. I am mostly listening to jazz these days, keeps me calm and doesn't whip the kids into a frenzy. My comp is down while I get a newq OS installed. So no rush.

This album and "Images" are part of The Complete Landmark Sessions, highly recommended.

I haven't heard the 24/96 Feelies disc so shouldn't assume it is better sounding than the CD. I just read some about the new Paul Simon record that is also available from HDTracks in an "audiophile" 24/96 version like the Feelies, and it's apparently compressed and limited just like the CD. So samples become even more important since these "high resolution" versions are usually sold for a premium.

I like that James Blake as well, although I'm not always a fan of his vocals. I'm particularly interested in the bass sounds he uses and the production over all. If you're more into the production than the voice, you may wanna check out Mount Kimbie: Crooks & Lovers. They've worked together and share some similar musical elements.

Right now, listening to:

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-b0z2Wl2yoZA/TZ8-SJF29OI/AAAAAAAAAbY/gNvGAi_-SgY/s400/7417544_462917130013_62694415013_11155733_4552334_ n.jpg (http://www.mediafire.com/?4k5hxltqwl2cka9)
Zomes: Earth Grid

This one's a solo release from former Lungfish guitarist Asa Osborne. If a bit, ok a lot, of repetition doesn't bother you and you like droney, distorted keyboards, this will hit the spot. Not totally drone based as all the songs are backed up by some minimalistic drum loops and generally in addition to the drone keyboard parts, he tosses in a secondary more melodic keyboard bit in the background. No vocals. Fuzzy and trancelike. I actually quite like this.

No, just the music. This is the second album I've purchased in FLAC (last year's Les Savy Fav was my first). I don't really care about the artwork or liner notes. If I did I would buy it on vinyl in any case. I burned my own back-up (in addition to my music library back-up external HDD).

Darryl Jenifer: In Search of Black Judas

Bad Brains bassist releases his first solo project on ROIR records and it's been worth the wait. I'll take this over the HR solo stuff any day. It starts out with a brief spoken introduction before the snarling guitars roll in and the music opens with an almost I Against I sort of vibe, just making sure you know this is one of the Bad brains here. After that, it settles back into some experimental dub mixed with straight reggae and a bit of quiet storm, with occasional moments of those familiar guitars rearing their heads. I'm really digging this one. Obviously not for the reggae purists, but if you're looking for some laid back dubby sounds and want something new, you could do a hell of a lot worse.

Still been testing the avant garde and folk-tronic here and there. Been enjoying these. Hard to determine if they are old style English folk songs that have been noodled around with samples and noises or analog electronic pieces that have been placed on top of folk forms. Either way, generally pleasant and melodic.

This one I've enjoyed very much. Picked up the CD remaster and heartily recommend it for anyone looking for something oddly spellbinding and absorbing that your just not going to hear anywhere else. This is it.

Mostly, as you might imagine, I've been listening to a lot of AR comps and attempting an avant garde comp, which isn't turning out to be very easy.

I should have known you'd be one to ask about Lester Young. I've heard bits and pieces of his stuff over the years, some I've really liked. But, what vinyl I've come across cheap hasn't been so hot. Either musically not as good as I was hoping or horrendous sound quality. Any suggestions on a good place to start with him? How's that collection? I've heard lots of good stuff on Verve from other artists.

If I may chime in here...vinyl with Lester is always a hit and miss due to the time he recorded in. I have a few originals that are not good recording wise. But at the same time look for some remastered Count Basie stuff that features Young. Some of those recording are good. The remasters on CD are much better than most of the Vinyl as far as Lesters own bands. You may also find some remastered CD's with Billy Holiday that features Young also...but vinyl is always a hit and miss with Lester Young seeing he is not in demand in todays world to most Jazz fans.

Thanks for the advice. I'm not generally super picky about sound or anything and enjoy plenty of less than top notch recordings, just the couple records I'd happened across were really poor to the point of not really being able to hear clearly. I'll see what I can come up with. Maybe some CDs would actually be best in this scenario.

Well if you like vinyl like me, it might worth it to search out some sites to find some good old pressings. Heres a great copy of Lester you may want to scope out...

Lester Swings.. with .Nat King Cole, Hank Jones, John Lewis, Ray Brown, Buddy RIch, Pappa "Chicago" Jo Jones all on this album....sound is the best recording I have on Vinyl of "The Pres" as he is know.http://img545.imageshack.us/img545/835/pict0165l.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/545/pict0165l.jpg/)

Hey Dave, the Verve set is a great place to start. It also allows you to hear his slow deterioration. Alcoholism eventually ate him whole. So, the earlier the better with Prez. As far as quality goes this set is excellent. In some cases they were unable to eliminate the analog backdrop, which I actually like. It's a little like listening to vinyl. I would also recommend the Savoy set which is also great.

There are certain artists that I have collected on disc. For example, I have an amazing Johnny Hodges Mosaic set which captures all of his small group work. The vinyl is super rare and ultra expensive, so why even bother? Unless you're a superfan...I also have a Sonny Stitt set of his Roost recordings, same thing.

"We don't punch girls and we don't punch a clock"

~Rae

Was at a garage sale this weekend where a guy was selling cassettes for a dime each and the girl I was with picked this one up. I was able to snag some old ROIR cassettes, like finally replacing my long lost first Bad Brains cassette, a copy of a Skatalites live set, and this total gem:

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uo_eC6uZluY/RnU-C5ZQ4QI/AAAAAAAAALc/ClbmVm3-DBc/s400/21st_century_dub_big.jpg (http://www.mediafire.com/?imjunomdfkh)
21st Century Dub

There's a bit of back story to this release, so I'm just gonna copy and paste a bit here....

The inspiration for 21st Century Dub came when Bob Marley toured Japan in 1979 and met Japanese electronica wizard Pecker (so named for his woodpecker-like twitching while playing percussion), who was fascinated with the Jamaican dub scene. Invited by Marley to bring key members of The Yellow Magic Orchestra to Jamaica for sessions, the extraordinary results of Pecker's work with both Studio One and Tuff Gong musicians were released on two albums in Japan in 1980, then on cassette only by ROIR in 1987. This first cd release of the recordings remains diverse and engaging, if more technically flashy as a result of Pecker's contributions. Strong dub jams like "Mystical Cosmic Vibration" and "International Orchitis" show the strong influence of Jamaican percussion duo Sly and Robbie, and contrast the more techno tunes by Pecker such as "Pecker Power Pt. 2". In between lie great versions of "Jamming" and "Concrete Jungle" recorded with the blessing, if not the participation, of Bob Marley himself. - Craig Tower

Anyway, however this came about, it is some really great dub. Enjoy.

This one came out last year, but I just grabbed it a couple weeks ago and now can't stop listening to it. It's a laid back midtempo mix of drum machines and synthesizers. For me, a bit reminiscent of Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works, although what little I've seen mentioned about this one doesn't mention that so maybe it's just me. The press clip says Thick grooves, cosmic chords. Melodies materialize. Forty minutes of future spiritual road music. Probably about as good a description as any.

This was a cassette release, but you can get a digital copy or stream it on Bandcamp. Supposed to be an LP of new material coming out sometime this year.

Just listened to that myself. Probably holds up better than the Japan stuff for me. Still contemporary. Pretty nice sounding too.

As for me, just discovered the Abecedarians a few days ago, and been listening a lot to the double 10" The Other Side of the Fence that was released in 1990, about when they called it quits. Some nice stuff on here. Click pic for more info and samples.

^yep, that David Sylvian is great and aged pretty well. 'Course he's still making music that sounds very similar. I put on his Nine Horses, Snow Borne Sorrow (2005) pretty often too. Another really gorgeous album that veers a little towards 'adult contemporary' -sounding sometimes but really rich, layered, and nicely played/recorded songs.

Emptyset: Demiurge

I'm too lazy today to write anything...here's a blurb found online:

Multiverse - the constellation of forward-thinking Bristol labels that also includes Tectonic, Kapsize and Caravan - reactivates its seminal Subtext imprint (best known for those mind-melting early Vex'd singles) for a daring new LP from Emptyset. A collaboration between Mutiverse boss James 'Ginz' Ginzburg and Paul Purgas, Demiurge is the second album by Emptyset, and finds them reducing their production process down to a singular signal chain channelled into a modulated analogue hardware line (or so we're told). The results are somewhere between drone, techno, noise, power electronics and the very outer limits of dubstep: in other words, audio porn for the more serious soundboys and girls among you. The duo's reliance on stomach-aching subs and ear-grazing blasts of static make clear their love of, and debt to, the work of Mika Vainio and Pan Sonic, and 'Void' reminds us of last year's blink-and-you-missed it Suum Cuique record: electronic music with real physical presence. 'Point' and 'Function' wrestle a kind of juddering techno groove out of jagged comper shrapnel, reminding us of the Raster-Noton bods like Byetone, Ikeda and Alva Noto at their most brutal and direct. 'Periphery' conjures the groaning, haunted interiors of Alien and Event Horizon, while the mid-paced warfunk of 'Tangent' sounds like it could raze Bristol to the ground if played out on a rig that’s up to it, and 'Monad' is an ear-walloping exercise in loop/edit delirium, coming over like Errorsmith in the depths of a black depression. The message is clear: in space, no one can hear you scream

Good **** and some serious bass if you're into that.

Excellent. I would have loved to have been there, but I did have a nice time with my (now) 5-year-old daughter, putting makeup on her new hairstyling/makeup head (and a bit of eyeshadow on me).

I did listen to these albums (records for the 1st two, and mp3s for the third):

My wife ridicules my fondness for the 80s whenever I play that Duran Duran. Brings back memories.

Actually, one memory in particular. During the high school years I worked in our local hardware/appliance/TV/electronics store in town. I was the only floor employee under 50 so I got to set up all the TVs & VCRs and these brand new laser disk players. We also rented out laser disks. When I saw the Duran Duran laser disk come in I thought to myself, "What a great way to show off a cutting edge AV setup!" So I loaded up the disk, on repeat, had it playing on the main display projection set and wandered off to unpack washers and dryers. A couple hours later I came in and saw semi naked women pillow fighting sumo wrestlers and such on the projection TV and about had a heart attack. I was pretty certain I was about to lose my job. Fortunately, thanks to living in a tiny, slow town, the only person who saw it was the old guy I did deliveries with...who was standing there watching as I came in. He said something about how I should probably turn it off and wandered away. Love that album.

I'm going to give it a guilty pleasure listen right now .

The Compact Two-Tone Story

This 4 CD box set collects the A-side and B-side of every single released on the label. Both sides of the Dutch Concrete Jungle single plus both tracks from the free single which accompanied initial copies of More Specials are also included. The Bodysnatchers live version of 007 is the only unreleased track in the set, however it did previously appear in the film Dance Craze but failed to make it on to the films soundtrack album.

Yup, all the singles form the Specials, Selector, English Beat, and more. Basically this is all that any but the most ardent two-tone fans would really ever need outside of instances where you happen to have a favorite album cut from here or there that you just HAVE to have. Well, then of course, you will at least need the first Madness album. OK, maybe this isn't everything you need. But, it's a lot of damn fine music nonetheless.

<b>The Sound of Jazz</b>

In 1958, CBS brought in an all star cast of the best jazz musicins they could find, Count Basie, BIlie Holiday, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Pee Wee Russel, Ben Webster and many more all jamming in makeshift lineups. The whole thing was filmed and shown on live TV. Then they made a record to commemorate the proceedings. A damn fine record at that.

So...chubb, how long you been hoarding jazz records...I get the impression we're seeing the tip of a pretty massive collection here.

Well truthfully it's a combination of vinyl, disc and digital files. With the kids I am just too busy for vinyl, I get in the odd session but not like I used to. So I have a Squeezebox and do alot of listening to files now.

I still grab up the vinyl.

I kind of arrived at my goals with my gear a while back. This has really allowed me to focus on music. With jazz, it's an endless path. I feel like I am way down the rabbithole right now, I have led myself to some rather lesser known giants.

Tonight a friend of mine received a 45 rpm copy of Evolution, based on my recommendation. He is about to bust it out, so I am refreshing on that album so him and I can wax all things Moncur III.

Anyhow I am trying to show up here at AR some more. I have been posting my music adventures elsewhere but I will post here now. BTW, I grabbed the Atlantic Ray Charles set, it has the Soul Meeting in it. Still love Soul Brothers, I have also took to david fathead Newman, his sax player.

I've seen the video, would love the audio. There's a really sentimental story behind Young and Holiday that culminates at that session.

Going back to the late 60's for some very early Deep Purple. In fact their 1st and 2nd releases.

Shades of Deep Purple and
Book of Taliesyn

First time I've heard these in years. They sound really good on the Dyns. It sort of blows my mind when I think back to the first time I heard this album it was on my very first HiFi system. It consisted of an Ampex cassette system with speakers and a Elac Miracord turntable. It sounded good to me then, little did I know how good it would sound 40 some years later.

Going back to the late 60's for some very early Deep Purple. In fact their 1st and 2nd releases.

I loved Deep Purple back in the day when Ritchie Blackmore was the guitarist. Good stuff!

My Man! Bringing back memories. I had Johnny Winter and his brother Edgar on vinyl back in the day. Now we talk about Albino Red....these two guys where really albino. One Album I had was Johnny Winter And...with RIck Derringer. Had some stuff with he and Muddy as well.....All that good stuff is gone now....how foolish of me.

Fats Waller: Favorites

Really nice 78 album with 4 records, 8 songs. Includes lots of big hits. Complete listing is: Honeysuckle Rose, Your Feet's Too Big, Aint Misbehavin', Hold Tight (Want Some Sea Food Mama), I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Baby, The Joint Is Jumpin', Two Sleepy People, and The Minor Drag. The records are all in pretty nice condition and are making me late for work while I finish up listening...last record's about to drop now. Yup, old 78 player is back in business, so I'll be dragging out a few stacks of old things like this for a while now.

Just a couple of my morning listens as I ease into the day.
Decided to crank up the SACD/DVD-Audio and surround (as it were ) myself in song.

nobody I have the Coleman Hawkins Quintet f. Teddy Wilson on Mercury (A43). It's a wonderful book with 3 discs and all of it is in excellent condition. If you would like it, let me know. I have come to the conclusion that i will never get into the 78 "thing".

Yes, please.

I'm not sure just how into 78s I will get. I know it can get pretty hairy if you get really into it with different equalization curves and speed variations and different stylus shapes and sizes. But, I do enjoy loading up the changer with the ones I have, a couple Fats Waller sets, a couple Louis Armstrong Hot Jazz albums, a big stack of King Cole Trio, some Sinatra, a few Western Swing discs and a couple stacks of random things is about it for now. But, with a player set up and functioning well, I can't say I think I will be likely to pass up those stacks of cheap shellac when I see 'em sitting there. I don't get too into the technical aspects, just have my mono 78 cart installed, clean 'em off a bit, turn down the bass and treble and load up the changer. Just good fun.

Elite Gymnastics - Ruin 1 and Ruin 2

You Twin Cities guys familiar with this?

jonnyhambone
08-24-2011, 12:38 PM
Not their music but they just got some attention for saying the Twin Cities has 'no scene'...something scenesters don't like to be told I guess.

NP: new War On Drugs is pretty solid after a few spins. Nice sounding vinyl too - best one liner descriptor I heard was 'like the Springsteen and Spiritualized albums sitting side by side in your alphabetized record shelf melted together in a desert heat haze' .

Haha, yeah, one of the guys from that band is a regular on another TC-specific board I visit and he's a little bit of a provocateur. I think he's basically a decent dude, though. Here's what he said there about the controversial quote:

tbh they cut out a lot of contextual stuff, the phone interview was really long and in real life i kind of meander when i talk so they had to do a lot of editing to condense it down to something readable

pretty sure i made it clear that i was saying "we aren't part of a scene" rather than "there is no scene at all"

the cat/girlfriend/torta stuff was just me listing off things i do instead of going to shows and club nights

but iunno i'm not mad at the interview at all i think it got the main points across

I tried to listen to some of their music. It's okay. I think the guy is at least consistent between the talk he talks and the walk he walks.

Haven't had much luck and have almost stoppd looking for records in thrift shops, but came up with a nice batch today...when I was actually just gonna stop in and pick up a coffee pot. All but four of these (the Monterose, the Brubek, the Basie and the Red Holloway) are original from what I can tell...although I've only glanced. The Hubbard and the Cliff Jordan have a bit of damage to the sleeves, but otherwise everything is in great shape cover-wise and the records themselves are all in excellent shape.
