Massive Attack: Heligoland

I'm really liking this one. I'm a big Massive Attack fan so don't know how objective I am, but I'd say if you like 'em at all this is more than worth a listen. Since their albums all seem to ave a distinctive mood, hard to really make comparisons, but it is pretty gloomy, but more beat heavy than something like 100th Window. Maybe most similar to Mezzanine but with a more tribal feel to the beats. This is gonna get a lot of plays.

It's great seeing you around, Dave!!!
We would love to hear what you've been listening to of late.

Love Mezzanine - not a big fan of 100th Window - so thanks - guess I'll have to try to pick this one up.

Track 4 on Mezzanine always blows my mind when played on a great system. Well. Maybe not blows my mind, but I love the thick drums in it.

The RZA is my favorite MC of all time. His work with Gravediggaz alone is worth legendary status. I saw Gravediggaz at the El Mocambo in Toronto, it was one of the best shows I've ever been to. For any hip hop fans who haven't heard this, try it out...

I adore that album. I would say Dissolved Girl, Man Next Door, Black Milk & Group Four are my favourites. It's funny because my least favourites are Exchange (boring) and Inertia Creeps (track 4) :p As for 100th Window, i reflect your sentiments however I think What Your Sould Sings is brilliant.
But my all time favourite from Massive Attack (and perhaps ever) is Unfinished Sympathy on the Blue Lines album.

Love it (albeit not immediately). Incredible hodgepodge of soundscapes, pulses, noises, and Beatles-esque pop psychedelia...and more. Seemed like utter chaos on first listen. Now I find it absorbing and fun.

I haven't pulled this out in 4-5 years, and didn't know that it has a bit of warpage.
I guess I didn't care too much of that when I had purchased it almost 10 years ago. Time like this, I'm really glad I had purchased the Clamp and Periphery ring.

Eels is pretty good stuff. I've only heard a bit but always look for them at the record store, only to forget the name, and thus have no luck in finding them. When I 1st heard them I thought it was a Beck side project from the voice. Something along the line of One Foot in the Grave, but I guess not.

I have to say, I'm really loving the way the AVA OmegaStar 250 in this system, fed with the HQ-1 as pre with GA#560 power all in the PSAudio Quintet with GA#560 power cord, does to this (http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:dnfyxqwgld6e) Frank LP.

Seems weird, but allmusic has this LP at 2 stars. I'm really digging in. Maybe people don't know what to do with the talking tracks. Maybe they just seem not too out of the ordinary for these youthful ears.

What I like best about this is the strings. The AVA just seems to handle strings like this so well. I have a Henry Mancini LP, I believe Strings on Strings and it just sounds so wonderful. Gives these thin string sections depth and body. The bass is soft and a bit blurred, and Frank's voice is just floating above everything else. Really a wonderfully calming sound. I just wish the LP was new and wasn't crackling. Oh well. Shouldn't ask too much from an LP made in '69 or something.

Some of my best-sounding LPs are from the 60s. They almost always need a through cleaning when I buy them, unless the previous owner did it. I've cleaned some records as many as three times, but the age isn't a problem.

I like that some of the drum strikes on Choas A.D. make the preggers cat that adopted us jump up from napping and look around.

Kind of makes me wonder, does it make the sound more real, or mean great dynamics, if a cat or dog gets scared?

Unwelcome Guests: Don't Go Swimming

I grabbed a single by these guys last year that was all full of heavy guitars with some punkish leanings and really enjoyed it. When I looked to see what else they had out, I grabbed a CD that turned out to be mostly acoustic country-tinged stuff. So, seeing this new release had me curious. This one seems like a bit of a blending of the styles with some songs taking on one or the other aspect and others mixing it all up, but leaning more to the electric guitar heavy side of things overall. I can see myself listening to this thing a ton this year.

To be sure, this soundtrack is dated; but if you're a fan of innovative and interesting soundtracks like myself, you won't want to pass this one up. Full of Emerson's percussive and syncopated beats and wierd time signatures, Night Hawks is a "must own" for collectors who want something different in their shelves. The instrumentation varies from straight-forward pieces to the esoteric juxtaposition of slippery strings and tone-bending analogue synths...truly far out listening that is never boring and nearly always enjoyable. If you have seen the movie, you know how this all fit so well with the chaos on screen.

As a dyed-in-the-wool ELP fan, I found this a compelling and wonderful reprise of some of the things I love most about the band. Musically adroit and informed; funky sounds and images and a vegetable soup of effects that keep me wanting more, the music of ELP was certainly among the most intelligent music around at their time. At times, this soundtrack pulls material from almost all of their albums: one moment we're in Brain Salad Surgery territory; another we're in Tarkus mode. Interestingly and perhaps most exciting of all is the generous inclusion of the orchestra, who zestfully plays parts that well could have been played on Moog, with great and awful zest. Still, the synth is not abandoned, and its inclusion alongside the orchestra's performance kept me well occupied throughout the entire performance.

Truly, a fun, fascinating and freaky ride!

I was in a classic Proggish mood over the weekend, I started with the entire album of Renaissance, disc 1 of 1,001 Nights. Then to King Crimson, Court of the Crimson King and for a finale I jammed Iron Butterfly, In A Gadda Da Vida.

Last night with my headphone rig it was Garrard and then Kingfisher Sky, Hall Of Dreams..

I really like it. Only in the last year or so have I listened to much Shins, and overall very little Danger Mouse, so I suspect this is fresher to my ears. I listened repeatedly for a good week or so. I don't think I'll tire of this album and shelve it forever. It's got enough going on to keep it going. I didn't know until recently that Danger Mouse has some Gorillaz history. That makes a lot of sense with some of the catchy beats of some songs (The Ghost Inside). Now that I know this, I can say that this is probably why I like the album. I don't think that the collaboration is seemless at all. Shins meets Danger Mouse/Gorillaz didn't merge into something new. It sounds like Shins and DM/Gorillaz playing side by side with some intersections. In that sense, I don't think this is a great, inventive album where something new comes out. It's a good coming together of sounds. Some alt-pop that has enough strangeness to engage you and enough hooks to keep you. Just enough.

Actually, in the strange cognitive associations of my mind. Broken Bells reminds me of this little gem of alt-pop from 1990 (Clickable) . Maybe the one-off effect? Or, perhaps, just an oddly functioning mind.

The atmospheric folk-pop outfit Joker's Daughter is a collaboration between English-by-way-of Greece singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Helena Costas and genre-bending hip-hop artist/producer Danger Mouse (Gnarls Barkley, Danger Doom, DM & Jemini)..... more on allmusic.com (http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:fnftxzt5ldte)

I have to say, so far so good. Interesting mix between female vocales, beats, strings, atmosphere, folk singing, guitar and noise. Much better than Danger Mouse and singer from The Shins.

Viva L'American Death Ray Music - Behold! A Pale Horse EP

This is one strange beast (and yes, it is a beast despite having only 4 tracks). After one listen, I'm very intrigued by this, but also shaking my head in bewilderment. The first track is a fuzzed-out rocker that had my head bopping and wanting more of the same. Then came track 2, which is a psychedelic dub workthrough. And the last two tracks are nothing like either of the first two. Strange stuff, and it's a difficult listen with the differences in genres among tracks, but in a time when I am finding very little music truly enjoyable, it might just hit the spot.

David Sanborn doesn't get a lot of traction from jazz purists as his style often borders somewhere between traditional and the Nu-Jazz. Closer stradles the line again, with a smoothness and mellow quality absent in some his more recent work. The sound quality is excellent (you can occasionally hear the rattle in his mouthpiece) and the instrumentation is spot-on. Highly recommended if you're a jazzhead in search of something "borderline different but familiar"...

This is one of the first albums I learned to play from start to finish. It's still to this day one of my faves.

Anyone thinking this is a washed up grunge album, think again. Musicians of AR, try jamming with this album and you will find it's difficult to get back to "1". Very odd times indeed, yet presented as seemingly straightforward. So clever.

However, Historical Conquests really grew on me and I think this album will too (when it actually comes out!).

dang...and I just read the NPR review where it says

Ritter's category lacks a name, but it has a sound, a vision and a sense of poetic determination that puts So Runs the World Away on a level reserved for records such as Bob Dylan's Time Out of Mind, Tom Waits' Rain Dogs and Simon & Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water. High praise, to be sure.

Speaking of Simon, Ritter recalls the melancholic side of that legendary songwriter in the epic "Another New World," as well as his perky side in "Lark." In the murder ballad "Folk Bloodbath," he imaginatively rewrites Blind Willie McTell's "Delia," while in the anthemic rocker "Lantern," Ritter explores love, risk and emotional safety.

Spot on. I borrowed it from the library. The recording quality alone makes it a gem, sounds very immediate in my system.

As for his style, I can take it or leave it. I do enjoy some older George Benson, and I liken this to that.

Glad you enjoyed it. I also generally prefer the masters but Sanborn's stuff is close enough to that edge that with the sound quality it makes for a decent occasional escape from the norm.

Love me some Charlie Hunter too, but you had already returned the favor...hadn't pulled out that ragged copy of Badmotorfinger in quite some time. On the last track on side B the cymbals were really crackling up and sounded really distorted and gated. Don't know it is an effect that is suppose to sound that way, or maybe too much compression in the mix, or something wrong w/ my TT.

Truly one of the best albums around. I really need to get this on LP.

I'm not a huge fan of Nirvana, but their MTV Unplugged is great as well as one by Lauren Hill and Cranberries. Perhaps start a thread on this?

David Sanborn doesn't get a lot of traction from jazz purists as his style often borders somewhere between traditional and the Nu-Jazz. Closer stradles the line again, with a smoothness and mellow quality absent in some his more recent work. The sound quality is excellent (you can occasionally hear the rattle in his mouthpiece) and the instrumentation is spot-on. Highly recommended if you're a jazzhead in search of something "borderline different but familiar"...

Sanborn rawks!!

I picked up a Ronnie Montrose album, produced by Edgar Winter, at the last record show and finally got around to playing it. I think it may be his first solo, it features a song called Open Fire, on the other side I remember Rocky Road. It's on Warner Bros Any way this is an excellent album, Rock instrumental, some could consider it Prog. Not sure the weight of the Lp but it's a heavier pressing and the sound quality is great, good production there Edgar.

I don't have this one but do have 6 plus a SF Jazz Collective where he directed (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=92401050). He's a terrific player. Over the long haul, I can't say that I like the funk infused Elastic band much (Momentum, Elastic). They were real fun for a few listens but then I got tired of them. In my opinion his compositions don't live up to his playing skills; his covers are generally good though. That said, I think my overall favorite of his has to be Beyond, in which all are his compositions. Unlike the rest, this one gets better with repeat listening and is worth checking out if you haven't. Freedom in the Groove would be next up on my list.

I've been scarred by bluegrass in my past having to share a work stereo with colleagues who were a bit obsessed with the genre and talked about it non-stop. However, this one is just so pretty and well done, I couldn't resist. (edit) UPDATE: Back after giving the album a serious listen. All I can say is if you like John Lee Hooker, Paul Simon's Graceland, and Dead Can Dance, than you absolutely MUST pick this album up. It is an amazing combination of these three along w/ of course the other stuff mentioned in the Allmusic.com write up.

What a fantastic album. The only complaint I could possibly have is in the engineering and cultural part. It seems a lot of stuff tracked fairly center in the soundstage. Even though there is a lot going on in the left and right channels, echo and guitar tracks coming in and out, drums starting up and fading away, the main singing and back up vocals, bass, guitar, and some drums are still tracked a little to dead center for me. There feels like, at least w/ this Electrocompaniet Prelude system, like there is some space to have spread things out a bit more. And culturally, it is all sung in a foreign tongue. Since I'm not too used to 'world music' (as in not sung in English) I did loose track of the music at about track 10 or 11. But tracks 12 and 13 slowed way down and got a lot spacier and I was sucked right back into what was going on.

Anyways, like I said, if you like the above three things, you MUST get this. I think it is just fantastic, and so will you!

Picked it up today, and thanks for your recommendation.
The red vinyl looks very cool, and makes me want to show it to people who are older than 80 and/or from Texas.

LOL - That is awesome. What do you think? It is pretty amazing this think this was being recorded in Soviet Russia in the '70's. And not too bad music to boot. The funky flute parts are pretty funny.

This lovely album is the second and final collaboration between the late Malian guitarist Ali Farka Touré and kora master Toumani Diabaté. Like its predecessor, In the Heart of the Moon, Ali and Toumani is a rich tribute to the late Touré, whose sweet guitar just floats through the air. This music is deeply and spiritually uplifting and nurturing: a must listen not only to world-music aficionados, but to anyone looking for solace, transport and just, plain music.

not sure what i think about it....

maybe it is one of those things that you had to be there for. at least for me. the guy at the record store, who was prob younger than my few 31 years (almost 32 this 27th) held it up to his co-worker, another young hipster, and made some weird social/cultural gesturing I was unable to interpret the meaning of. So I gave him the universal raise of the eye brows to indicate my curiosity as to what that was all about. He said he can't figure out if velvet underground is better or worse w/o neko. I just shrugged and paid the bill.

well... by the end of side 2 now i'm starting to vibe along the last couple songs....i'll give it another spin some time soon.

I'm not sure that would be a case in point. In fact, I would say side 1 was a bit too accessible, was there something subtle I am missing? I'll give White Lighting/White Heat a try sometime soon.

Noob and Pops...

If you can find this on vinyl get it. Noob I think you have Focal speakers which have a lively tweeter and Pops your Missions are lively as well. Metheny's music does very well with speakers that are lively with sparkle and you both have the right speaker. So if you can find this on vinyl snatch it.

In light of today's "Comtemporary Christian" that is a slam to SOB. I find Sounds of Blackness more R&B with some unique arrangements and choral accents. Africa To America also has some well done influence from African music. This particular album is a good blend of influences, including some horns and funk.

A bunch of Mahogany Rush stuff was re-released not long ago on CD, they packaged like 3 albums onto a two disc set at a very good price. They were remastered as well. I picked up the one with What's Next and the live album. I've got several of their LP's from back in the day. If I'm not mistaken Frank put an album out sometime during this decade.

Hey Pops hey noob...heres a little heads up for you two....I got word that a album by Paul Desmond was being re-issued again on vinyl after being out of circulation for a while. You can always find it on CD but not on vinyl. So I ordered it about 2 months ago and I had to wait till they got pressed and shipped over to cduniverse. Its a limited pressing and supply. And its only $18 not including shipping, and its 180 gram virgin vinyl. I got my copy yesterday. The album is "First Place Again" and he has Jim Hall with him as always and he has the second half of the "Modern Jazz Quartet" with him as well..that being Percy Heath and Connie Kay. so if you can spare the loot, go ahead a grab a copy while they still have them....cduniverse.com http://www.cduniverse.com/sresult.asp?HT_Search_Info=Paul+Desmond&HT_SEARCH=xartist&style=music&rmf=P

Off work today, so I think I will start my day with some Stan Getz and strings. Conducted by Hershy Kay in 1961, Stan Getz was age 34 and this was released on Verve.

OF course Getz blows his smooth sax but this time with him are 10 violins, four violas, two cellos a bass, harp and percussion. All the music was composed and arranged by Eddie Sauter for Getz and he had never seen the music before this recording and he did it all in one take. Nothing was scored for him nor had any area been left open deliberately in the composition for his improvisations. Stan being trained in many orchestras in his youth...Stan Kenton, Jimmy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, and Woody Herman, he was able to find his spots on the fly. So today ima given a shout out to Stan Getz.

I was a big fan of all three guitarist especially Al Dimeola with his work with Return to Forever and his other stuff with Lenny White. We all know about John McLaughlin but some dont know about Paco De Lucia who in my opinion was the best of the three guitarist. He was more known for his flamenco style.
