I've mostly been listening to parts of the Girl Group Sounds box set I got for Xmas. There are songs on it that are too fluffy even for me, but overall, the set (at least what I've spent serious time with) is excellent. The standout for me so far is the Shangri-Las' "Train From Kansas City." Neko Case covered this on her live album, but the original outshines even Ms. Case's great version.
Does anyone have any Shangri-La albums ("greatest hits," anthologies, or "proper" albums) to recommend or possibly share? I looked at the local record store last night, and it didn't have anything.

...Happy Valentunes Day?
Listening to ZZ Top myself- just discovered Mescalero and Rhythmeen, thanks to a friend. Have Antenna on order, and he's bringing me Chrome, Smoke & BBQ (where's the beer??) today. Nary a Valentine's Day song on 'em.
Happy VD, all!

My brother turned me onto Rhythmeen. (I think his copy was 2nd gen from a cdr Billy Gibbons made for a mutual friend). I thought they were still stuck in synth land but they trashed the drum machine years ago and got into real playing again. Those three discs you mentioned plus Dequello are supposedly the only ones without screwed up sound. Chrome, Smoke & BBQ will probably result in all new discs from the pre-RCA years. I hope it sounds good because I think that's the latest mastering job.

I bought Mescalero last year, had Antenna; disappointed in both of them. This band has had it. From Afterburner ('84) till '03, I'd be hard pressed to make one good 80min CD-R
On a positive note, I did pick up One Foot In The Blues, which is a Warner Records comp of ZZ's blusier stuff, most of it being from the '70s/'80s. For those who might already have their 'Best Of' or Greatest Hits (or both), this is a great companion piece as there is little over lap twix the three. Really, all the ZZ-Top one needs is in these three comps.

Finally bought my first Led Zepplin, the 2003 twofer DVD. Muy Excellante, this is all the Zep I'll be needing.
Chick Corea 'The ultimate adventure' - new release with Hubert Laws on flute and Airto, classic chick sound ala My Spanish Heart, or Crystal Silence.
Tony Williams Lifetime 'Emergency' -pretty good but no goosebumps.
Weather Report 'Black Market' -after being blown away by Body Electric, sought out more WR -you can hear them moving towards the Heavy Weather sound here, I prefer their spacier early sound. Shoulda bought Mysterious Traveler.
CC Adcock 'Lafayette Marquis' -like a mix of Dr John and N.Miss Allstars. Yech was raving about this on that other board and I took a chance, it's a keeper.

You should have called it Valentune's Day!
Now see your list accurately demonstrates why I don't post in this thread anymore. You could post a list of gobbeldy-gook (and I have) and no one would even notice. :-)
NP: Quicksand and Cradlesnakes - Califone via Daveybear
This is way more experimental sounding than I remembered, but I love it!

I was drunk. How else do you think I could get through listening to that crap? :D
I did listen to that very fine orchestrated version of Klaatu's Hope today (twice actually). I think that if you do another radio show you should start it off with We're Off You Know again. That could be your thing, to start each show that way. It's an amazing version of an amazing song. I just wish that they had put a better ending on it.

Mostly Califone and some of their family bands, like their preceding incarnation as Red Red Meat, and some of Tim Hurley's Sin Ropas and side project Loftus and lots and lots of Califone. Good stuff. Warms a body down.
Right now I've got a mp3 comp playing of songs I downloaded from their site. Lots to love about these guys. That Bunny Gets Paid album shown in the image below is outstanding. Also been playing Roomsound and Heron King Blues and Snowbunny's pick of the litter, Quicksand/Cradlesnakes. What a great catalog.

Omygawd! I went out for lunch last week with an old friend I hadn't seen since High School and he said, "Didn't you used to be really in to Klaatu?" Well, yeah, but I was in to a lot of other cool bands too! Is that how my high school peers perceived me? Did they think I was watching Star Trek and playing Dungeons & Dragons? Heheheh...
Have you heard much of Stars over there at the centre of the universe, Autumn? I think they were playing somewhere there tonight.

Ewww. That's a creepy cover! And a creepy name for that matter. Kind of reminds me of the doll I just paid $140 for.

Several months ago I went into HMV and put Stars into a listening station. I didn't like it much. I've heard them a few times since and they really just do nothing for me. They played three sold-out shows here in December and are back on March 1 for another show at a larger venue, according to the Arts and Crafts web site. So, I guess they have a pretty big fan base here, but I'm not part of it.
I'd much rather spend my time listening to your BC bred New Pornographers.

Roomsound is the way to go now. You probably have most of it already on that Califone comp, but it's still a treat. One of my modern music favorites. Might be my favorite of the 00's so far, at least one of the top 5. I've been turning on some others to the joy of Califone lately and found out that Roomsound has been out of print for awhile and going for lots of money on the used market. It was initially released on their own Perishable label (fitting name) but they are with the much bigger Thrill Jockey now and Roomsound is gonna be reissued on Feb 21 via them. That's good news. Great music like this shouldn't be out of print, especially so soon after release. That Red Red Meat album I mentioned is the same story, except isn't being reissued yet. Goes for the big bucks. They are reissuing the first Red Red Meat so maybe they'll get around to the Bunny too. Nice stuff.

Also just found out some cool news about Andrew Bird that I've been meaning to pass on, but not sure if anyone around here really cares at this point. I was looking for something at Darla and saw that The Mysterious Production of Eggs is getting a vinyl release. Think I'll have to grab one of those. Love the music and the art ...
