Tuesday's Gone

Train roll on, on down the line,
Won't you please take me far away?
Now I feel the wind blow outside my door,
Means I'm leaving my woman behind.
Tuesday's gone with the wind.
My baby's gone with the wind.

And I don't know where I'm going.
I just want to be left alone.
Well, when this train ends I'll try again,
But I'm leaving my woman at home.

(chorus)
Tuesday's gone with the wind.
Tuesday's gone with the wind.
Tuesday's gone with the wind.
My woman's gone with the wind.

Train roll on many miles from my home,
See, I'm riding my blues away.
Tuesday, you see, she had to be free
But somehow I've got to carry on.

Okay...I'm listenin' to:

Pink Floyd - DSOTM on 5.1 SACD (even better in surround sound, I never get tired of this one)
Pearl Jam - Lost Dogs (oddly enough, their best album)
Metallica - ...And Justice For All
Symphony X - The Odyssey (I'm love 'em/hate 'em with these guys, but when they're on, they're on)
Opeth - Ghost Reveries (awesome)
Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
Arena - Pepper's Ghost

Oh, and Holst's "The Planets" in DVD-A...John Williams ripped this guy off big-time on Star Wars...but then Lucas told him what he would listen to during each scene, so I guess he was suppose to?

(Okay, and a bit of Motley Crue..."Kickstart My Heart" still rules).

I've been listening to Death Cab's Plans a lot at home. I have the double lp and the first record gets a lot of play.

"Takk", Sigur Ros

Also listened to some of Jane's Addiction's Nothing's Shocking last night. Not sure what made me pull that one out.

Some homemade comps in my car.

I posted this over at Davey's "Dissolver" thread, because it sorta read like a Tuesday Thread. I'll re-post just to keep the dream alive...

Since my last Tuesday thread post I've gotten a few new things and a few new-old things, (this is a Tuesday - What you been listening to - thread, isn't it?);

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah I like this a lot, no real problem with the "quirky" vocals, and the music works for me.

Kings of Leon - Aha Shake Not as memorable as their debut, but still a fine album that fulfills my need for the occasional loose, whiskey-soaked southern rock.

Cake - Comfort Eagle More of the same from Cake, which is just fine by me. But I think after three Cake albums, there's not much need for any more.

P.J. Harvey - Dry I waited waaaayyy too long to get this f-ing great album. I may end up liking this more than Rid of me, which is saying ALOT!!!

Explosions in the Sky - The Earth is Not a Cold Dark Place Moody, atmospheric instrumental rock with nice shimmering guitars and good to excellent drumming. GYBE-esque, without the pretensious spoken-word stuff.

Rogue Wave - Out of the Shadow Another good band that I'm just discovering. Reminds a little of Beulah, I guess, with a little harder edge...maybe.

Muse - Absolution I guess this what Radiohead would sound like, if they decided that The Bends was the best album they'd ever make, and we'll just try to duplicate it. Likeable enough, but hasn't made a lasting impression.

Elliott Smith - From A Basement on a Hill I've only had Either/Or from E.Smith and like it a lot, and trhis sounds almost as good. Makes me want to dig deep into his back catalogue, at least until I find something that isn't great.

Stars - Set Yourself On Fire I hate to sound like I like everything I try, but what can I say...I usually buy stuff based on people's tastes who I know are similar to mine, so very few missteps. So guess what, Il like this album too. Perfect for fans of Belle & Sebastien, The Lucksmiths, etc...

The Arcade Fire -EP It doesn't have the polish and maturity of Funeral and, dare I say, gets a litlle annoying at times, but it does have a couple of songs that show the potential that was realized on Funeral, particularly the last song; "Headlights Look Like Diamonds", which sounds like it would be right at home on Funeral.

Wilco - Kicking Television No dissapointment here. Fine sound for a live album, and the songs are well chosen. I don't have A Ghost is Born yet, but this live set makes it more likely that I will pick it up at some time in the future.

All-in-all, a whole bunch of new music to digest, with the P.J. harvey album seeming to be the real stand-out.

Maybe FA needs to be in charge of posting the Tuesday Thread

retro buy; BestBuy online__ Kevin Gilbert:Thud - bought this based on what I heard on Delicious Agony a few weeks ago. And there it was, one of my fave tunes ever, 'Goodness Gracious'. Ecclectic album though.

Pawn shop finds__two soundtracks- Escape From L.A. ('96) and The X-files ('98). And might I say, nary a duft tune on either CD; bought both together for $5

Cheap find__Dredg:Catch Without Arms - quirky quasi-indie rock band that sound like mid '80s U2 at times (I don't hate U2, btw) and other times they seem to be able to channel late '70s Climax Blues Band or Boz Scaggs with their silky bass grooves and pop beat. But then they run smack out of ideas toward the end, loosing me after about the 8th track. Still, I'm happy with it, considering I only paid $5.99 @ BB new! I can't for the life of me figure out why this band pops up with certain other bands over at Amazon as a related album when I'm parusing prog recs...hhmmm...

Rush:Vapor Trails - poor sonics aside, this is gotta be their best effort in a long time, and I'm glad to see the synths take breather.

Web purchases (courtesy of my $75 BestBuy gift card):

IQ:Seventh House - finally, an album from this group that lives up to the band's hype, but this album gets little of it (hype). Killer actually.

Riverside:Second Life Syndrome I haven't had a whole lot of time with this one, but the first few tracks rock harder than their first CD. Still liking Out Of Myself as well.

Spock's Beard:Octane - I like it more with every listen; FE too.

from weeks past:

Kino:Picture
Coheed & Cambria:Second Stage Turbine Blade - just OK
Blackfield:Blackfield, which is BTW, a very good companion piece to Opeth's Damnation, for me anyway.

Robin Trower comp courtesy of Hyfi - thanks a bunch - me likes!

I have just recieved, but have not had time to digest, two comps from JC. I listened to one halfway through (Year end 2005) on my way to work today and so far, a very good set.

Surely I'll remember something else as soon as I hit the submit button...

I was listening to Gilbert over the holidays, and his posthumous The Shaming Of The True is the the best concept album ever recorded. This is one helluva piece of art, and yes, it does qualify as that. Not all of the songs are great, but Gilbert was experienced enough and talented enough to write about the cruel and cynical realities of the music business as no one else has done.

You have to listen knowing the context. The man at a very young age earned a reputation in the biz for his playing and songwriting abilities. He worked as an engineer and producer. He was one half of Toy Matinee. He wrote almost all of the material on the first Sheryl Crow ablum and received a Grammy, he worked with the likes of Michael Jackson and Madonna, and, if memory serves me correctly, orchestrated Keith Emerson's Abbadon's Bolero, and worked with Emerson on his Changing States album. But I get the impression that he was an over-hyper over-achiever, and hence an outsider. It looks like Sheryl Crow's record company convinced her to abandon him after Tuesday Night Music Club, and that he was extremely bitter from that point on. Then he wrote The Shaming of The True.

It is absolute genius. It is articulate, wise, funny, cynical, and poignant.

The shining lights burn the brightest, and this is a fine final tribute to a musician who has become legendary, and is sadly missed by everyone who knows his music.

Kaviar, on the other hand isn't worth the time it takes to listen to it. It hardly counts as a Kevin Gilbert album, but rather appears to be an attempt to convert fragments of tapes into a final commercial product. I find it hard to believe that Kevin Gilbert would have wanted to make an album that sounds this horrible.

Well, I'd have to say your version is tame compared to other accounts I've read about the Crow incident. From what I've read, they were all supposed to be an act; Crow, Gilbert, David Baerwald, and David Ricketts (of David & David), but it was a gentlemen's agreement, and Crow took much more credit than she was due, and pushed the others to the background (the album does list the three as contributing writers) and went on as a single act. Of course, other accounts suggest drugs played a big role in Crow's ability to do what she did: that if those three had been lucid and sober for most of their career, instead of the desperate blow mongers they were alledged to be at that time, then they wouldn't have put all their eggs in Crow's basket.

Thanks for the heads-up; I do plan on getting that album for sure now.

Your post about my "first experience" inspired me spin most of the disks on that list. I haven't been listening to too much prog or metal lately, but that thread made me wanna hear some. :)

and so was I. Been friggin' busy and out of town, but I'll try to contribute in the near future. In the meantime, I just played that Scissor Sisters you sent me, and I have to admit it's pretty good. Haven't spun it in months, so it was good to hear. Also the new Big Star...and I don't think many on the board have mentioned it...The Magic Numbers, Doves, and I can't remember what else. Had a few pops already tonight, so I'm feeling punchy. I think I'll pull out my Strat and wail away for a little while.

Bye,
Swish
