I am looking for a turntable, and am really interested in the Music Hall MMF-2.1, and MMF 5. I know very little about turntables but know I want my music to sound good. Can I hook either one of these up to my Yamaha HTR receiver, do I need an adapter? What are the main differences between the 2 tables and is it worth it to get the more expensive one? Thanks!

Does your Yamaha have a phono input?

Two things the MMF5 has over the 2.1 is the glass platter and dual layer plinth. Nit picky stuff that can make a small difference.

Personally though I just can't deal with a fully manual table. Starting is no problem, but if it don't at least lift the needle up at the end of the record it's useless to me!

But if you decide on the 2.1 I remember seeing a site that had them in like 6 different colors....red, white, yellow, blue, green, or silver. The colors looked pretty cool if that's your sort of thing :)

What is the Yamaha model number or does it have a phono input?
Music hall is a good TT but may I suggest this one:
http://www.electronics-expo.com/images/large/500/TECSL1210M5G_CENTER.jpg

This is a 700.00 table on sale for 488.88 plus shipping.
http://www.electronics-expo.com/product.jsp?x=SL1210M5G&webcategory=null&submenu=null
Just add to cart to see the price.
See specifications: http://www.panasonic.com/consumer_electronics/technics_dj/prod_specs_sl1210m5g.asp

You will need a cartridge though.
I have heard good things about this one:
KAB/Ortofon
ProS40
http://www.kabusa.com/GIF/Cc_pro_sL.jpg
and it installs in seconds.

OUTPUT 5cm/S:4mV
FREQ RANGE:20Hz - 29kHz
RESPONSE 20Hz-20kHz:+2 -0 dB
TRACKING 315Hz:>90uM
LATERAL COMPLIANCE:25 uM/mN
STYLUS TYPE:FG70 5/70 uM
STYLUS REPLACEMENT:STY40
STYLUS TIP MASS:0.30 mG
TRACKING FORCE: 1.25-1.75 Gr
LOAD IMPEDANCE: >47kOhm,
200-500pF
CARTRIDGE WEIGHT: 18.5 Gram

The advantage of the integrated design is that the arm wand, cartridge coils and cantilever are in alignment. This creates a better path for vibration dispersion. The result is great midrange transparency and powerful punchy bass. These are custom assembled by KAB. Who else!

And if you need a phono stage KAB has several affordable units to choose from:

Let me know...
If it does not, I may have to look in to that parasound system I wanted to buy. :)

That receiver does not have a phono input. You can't use a turntable with it at all without a stand alone preamp.

Well, two votes against manuals, it looks like. I'll vote for manual. I have the MMF 5 and enjoy it very much. It is great straight out of the box with the supplied cart. Fact is there is not too much difference between tables in that price range. Biggest difference is auto vs. manual. And I say this in all seriousness, all joking aside: If you drink (or toke) while listening to music you must, must, must use an automatic table. The manuals are unforgiving in that regard. You'll drop the needle and/or forget to turn the bastard off. I keep and use a manual table too just because of this.

Thanks for all the responses. If I require a preamp for photo, I will just look in to my Parasound Halo A23/T3 combo before I go the phono route. Maybe next month I can make it all happen.
