Do you have a budget? Are you willing to consider vintage/used? The 1980/90s were the heyday of some really rude speakers including Cerwin Vega and Infinity Studio Monitor series. You can squeeze alot of crunch from them.
Buy these:http://cgi.ebay.com/Infinity-SM152-3-Way-Speakers-300W-15-Woofers-SM-152_W0QQitemZ5840127711QQcategoryZ61376QQssPageNam eZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I have the Paradigm monitor 9 v 2 that I think are a good rock speaker that are near your suggested budget. However the highs are smoothed over which was not to my liking for rock, but the bass is hard hitting. (Not as good as the bass from the Studio 100's, but this speaker is above your budget). Don't know if the newer versions are improved in this area. The B&W DM 601 s3 on the other hand have an excellent tweeter and has a sharpness to the treble that I like for hard rock, heavy metal and can be purchased for under $500 cdn. Unfortunately the low bass from this bookshelves is lacking and should be accompanied with a sub. So if you can swing your budget to combine both of these speaker into your system this is what I would do. Otherwise you are going to have to sacrifice bass or the high end to find a good rock speaker at your suggested budget.
I would also look into Cerwin Vega speakers, they have a new line that looks like they can really rock. Don't know their price range however but I would guess they have something decent for your budget. I am only familiar with the LS-8 which I own which can really thump for an 8" bookshelf.

that you absolutely cannot kill (trust me I know) DCM KX-12 I think is the model. I've an ex-girlfriend with 3 teenagers who've been crunching these things since I got them for her off the bay. They ain't blown em up yet.

My personal suggestion would be some JBL L-100's or if you can find a pair of JBL 4430's or 4425's for that price go with it. Another thing would be the JBL L100t3's
