Depends on the gun and the proximity. To the shooter, according to a safety pamphlet I have here, it says 120 dB and higher...a bit vague, but a place to start.

A 22 short in a rifle might just crack 80dB, a .44mag more is like 140db! (trust me it will make your ears bleed!)

One time I was up in Boston for the 4'th, and took in the Pops at the clamshell. We were camped out not far from the carbide cannons. When the time came to light them off during the 1812 Overture all hell broke loose. That has to be the loudest thing I've ever heard by far, beating the time I saw the Who at RFK stadium in Philly (1983) by a wide margin.

My uncle flew F-16's for years....closest I got to one was maybe 100 yards on a runway getting a demo with him in his. The rockets on those birds got pretty loud, even with head gear on.
Saw lightning hit a metal garden shed, that was pretty loud. Not sure if it topped the F-16 though. I'm guessing those were well over 120 dB.
I don't even want to know what 140 dB would sound like.

Is there not a threshold of some sort where spl maxes out?

Yes.

At St Louis "International". The loudest thing I've ever heard - it seems to twist, torture sound.

Oh my gosh yes, I used to live across the street from a drag strip.....amazingly loud!
.......of course it would probably peg my Rat Shack meter.

Or up close and personal to an 18,000 rpm F1 engine?

I don't know - those nitro fuelies can put out some power too.

On the other hand, the 900 hp three litre F1 motors shriek at their engine speeds Use hydraulic valves as conventional ones simply float. I've enjoyed great gearhead symphonies at the Indy Grand Prix, but had to wear ear plugs after a while!

make a hell of a racket when taking off at a nearly 90 degree angle. i saw that happen in guam back in about '68.

a good recording of a gunshot is on the telarc album-eine straussfest. my technique is to find the loudest level it will play without distortion and then SURPRISE someone on the couch. heh-heh-heh, it works every time.
