This is long overdue.

We're like a little (dysfunctional) family here at the AR forums, and I've got to know what everyone looks like. Let's see some pictures. If you want, include your stereo, significant other, pets, but lets see what everyone looks like. Should be interesting.

Attached is me at Immedia's offices in Berkeley, trying to be a kool kat. We were spinning some vinyl on Immedia's kick butt system, a mix of Immedia's turntable, some burmester gear, some high-end Japanese gear, rogue audio tube amp, audio physic speakers. I was chillin'!

I'll look for a better picture of my ugly mug. Let's see them folks! Terrence, Wooch, Geoff, Loser, G and JohnMichael, SMOKEY, DeanMartin, Topspeed, everybody!!

Alas, like Pat, I'm not much of a techie either. The closest I got to computer literacy was when I followed a friend's advice to "buy the latest, greatest computer you can find...and immediately give it to your assistant."

However, the next time you come down to your old stomping grounds, I'll gladly buy you a beer :). Consider it an open invitation.

How do you post a pic?

First you need a digital picture of yourself on the computer. If you don't have this, and no digital camera, then it will be a pain for you. You'll need to take a photo, connect the camera to the computer, and get the photo off the camera. I guess i assumed everyone stored their photos digitally nowadays.

If you've got already got a photo somewhere on your computer, then when making a post scroll down below the text window and click "Upload/Manage Photos" you can then browse to your photo and upload it, and it will be displayed in the post.

don't use the small insert image button.

when making a post, BELOW the text box you type into, there is box that says "Additional Options" in there there is a button that says "Upload/Manage Photos" click that. then a dialog box will pop up. in that dialog, click the "Browse" button, and you should be able to find your photo.

VERY cool! That looks like Le Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City. Beautiful town with some amazing restaurants (French food, but without the snooty attitude and high prices that you typically find at French restaurants in the U.S.). My wife and I went on our honeymoon there and in Montreal. What a wonderful time (and contrast with two very different French-speaking cities) we had there!

You are correct. We stayed there our first year in Quebec. It has become a summer tradition to spend a week in Quebec. I put money aside every month so I can enjoy all the wonderful restaurants. We used to divide our time between Montreal and Quebec but now we stay in Quebec in the old walled city and take the train to Montreal for shopping and lunch. If I have had previous lives one was lived in Quebec. I feel like I am home when I am there.

well, first she moved away, supposedly temporarily, but wanted to stay together. after five months, and no sign of moving back, I broke it off. that short was a poker game, where the character was playing his id, ego and superego for control of his mind (the screenshots are of the id, hence the tats, cigars, etc). am pretty much just in the indie film scene here in new york, and also work on some international tv shows, the same 'ol same 'ol struggle, trying to slowly inch my way into the biz.

Cool idea. Is this your film? How is it trying to break in film? I'd love to be comedy writer (for shows like Conan or Bill Maher) but have no idea how to get into it. Also I am not funny, which is a problem.

yeah, it was pretty much an experimental idea i had to try out and play with, and turned out better in some ways than i expected. it played a festival here in nyc, but nothing major and, as usual, nothing came of it (yet!).

and imo, i think the film industry is the hardest to break in to for more reasons than would fit on this server's space haha.

comedy writing is its own niche and incredibly difficult even by film standards to break in to. am not really sure what their (conan, maher, snl, etc) policies are, but they have such a massive stable of writers that they dont generally look elsewhere for material. just check out the end credits of any comedy show. especially conan who has such a pedigree himself (harvard (i think?), the simpsons, etc.) a good friend of mine used to work on the daily show and he did the standup route to get that gig on the daily show, and he and i both have a few friends running the standup circuit now and holy crap is that hard work. its no mistake that tons of standup comics can take on incredibly dramatic roles and do them better than 'dramatic' actors.

Thanks you guys :-)

Those speakers are from the Onkyo Integra THX-System1 i used to own. Had two THX subwoofers, 3 identical centers and 2 surround speakers. It was a kick ass system and i drove it with a Onkyo Integra TX-DS939 and a Marantz DV4300 DVD player. I sold this system to move from my 1.6 Maggie system to the 3.6 :-)

My house was built in 1960. I believe the previous owners had the kitchen remodeled in the 80's. The cabinets are in great conditions. I would love to put in a new floor and counters though. If you look to the side of me, you can see a little bit of the orginal oven. The original oven, stove and fan are all working perfectly so no need to replace em. The previous owners lived here 40 years and kept the house in excellent condition.

Here are my setups: First the Double New Advent vintage garage system (I probably spend more time here than anywhere else):

The double Advents sure bring back memories or is that called a flashback. Nice systems. I have yet to hear a pair of Soundlabs but I have read some wonderful reviews.

E-Stat, NICE!!!

On top of that you can see your garage floor. Your main system must be in a dedicated room. Very nice.
Thank you. It is. Two rooms in the house are mine: the garage and the dedicated sound room in the basement. There I am free to place as many bass traps as I need. I get no grief from placing the speakers ten feet out from the back wall or using garden hose sized cables as well.

The rest is hers. :)

I'm hoping to convert my messy garage into a dedicated room in the somewhat near future. I want it to be really nice so I'm gonna take my time and do it right. It will mainly be for HT. First thing I gotta do is be able to see what my garage floor looks like agian.

I originally purchased (again) the Advents for nostalgic reasons as my first real "hi-fi" speakers back in '72 were Advents. New Advents (circa '78) are slightly different in that the tweeters are now ferro-fluid cooled and the crossover is simpler. I replaced the electrolytics with Solens film caps. I am continually amazed about two things: the modest amount of power a double pair requires (2 watts gives 85 db or so peaks) and their ultimate resolution capability. The rest of the garage system is mostly hand-me-down from the main one: Threshold Stasis amp, Pioneer Elite CDP and various JPS Labs and DH Labs ICs, speaker cable and power cord. While the Advents still have a touch of "boxiness" absent from most modern designs, the drivers can hold their own. Above all, their voicing is still quite balanced and natural three decades later.

I'd say restore them.

Two words: they disappear (sonically, if not visually). They can truly "float" a voice in front of you. The U-1s also achieve low end response down to the upper 20s unlike most full range 'stats..

All of them were. The two generations are marked visually by two details: the original woofers had masonite rings around the 10" driver in a 12" basket and the tweeters had small baffles that extended from the cabinet. Second gen models had steel woofer frames and flush mounted tweeters. Here are pics from Ebay of representative samples:

Who made your entertainment center (or at least where did you buy it)? I'm not looking to put my system in an enclosure, but I love that slide out media cabinet! My wife has been hounding me to look into more attractive (and concealing) ways of storing my DVD collection, which is now starting to pile up along the wall.

Yeah I still gotta bunch of this stuff laying around. I've had my Panny HTIB for seven years and it's still going. I got it setup in the garage with a old Kenwood CDP. It sounds awful but it works. I got my Yamaha's and another set of Sony's just sitting in the bedroom. I'm suprised my wife's not complaining.

I managed to talk her into letting the HT stay together for now. But the new stereo rack got packed up. Everything is just kinda here and there with the wires reaching out as far as they can go. It wouldn't make a good picture unless you put it under the "don't do it this way" heading.

Did you make those panels yourself?

Yup, homemade! Bought a $16 box of acoustic ceiling panels at a home center just to see how much of a difference they could make with taming the echoes in my room, and I was stunned at how much they tightened up the imaging up front along with subtly smoothing out the midrange and highs. Of course, my wife did not appreciate the look of five acoustic panels sitting on the floor behind the TV and speakers, and the three panels that I had lined up behind the sofa. So, I wrapped the panels with fabric and sealed the fabric to the panels with a hot glue gun. Simple and very inexpensive way to increase the WAF.

To make the panels suitable for wall mounting, I just used two strips of pine along the top of the panel and clamped them together using C-clamps. I suspend the panel from the wall using picture molding that my wife and I installed around the house, and fishing line looped through the C-clamps. The things look like they're floating on the wall, and the advantage of suspending them from a picture molding is that I can slide them around (change the height and location almost at will) without having to poke new holes on the wall.

My next acoustical improvements will probably entail using rigid fiberglas boards, because they are more effective sound absorbers and their absorption does not vary as much throughout the frequency range as the ceiling panels that I use do. I'm also looking into absorption triangles for the upper corners around the ceiling (see link below), and some Auralex LENRD bass traps in the two front wall corners.

I was reading about putting panels at the first reflection points and all that good stuff, but why are they behind your front three?

In my case, it's partly because my speakers have rear firing ports and I needed something to help deaden the port noise. Having the panels along the front wall is good for absorbing the front to back reverberation. My sidewalls are not amenable to hanging a 2'x4' panel, so I just have a thick quilt hanging at the first reflection point. Deadening the front wall noticeably reduced the amount of slap echo that I got from my room. My current setup is not as extreme as before; as a WAF compromise, I only use three panels up front instead of five, and as such the imaging is not quite as tight as when I had the entire length of the front wall covered.
