Playing PAL DVD's on a Denon 2200 Universal

Has anyone out there been successful at doing this? I bought a PAL DVD assuming it would play on my 2200 because it "claims" to be a Universal Player. When I pop it in I hear the sound, but the video is all garbled. I go to the "Settings" menu and change the source setting from "Multi" specifically
to "PAL" and the picture is still garbled. When I try to hit the PAL/NTSC button on the remote I get the flashing "Talk to the hand" symbol on the screen meaning I can't perform this function.

Am I doing something wrong? Do I need a special kind of multi-system TV or is PAL playback simply not possible with the Denon 2200? Of course then that leads to the question...what the heck is that button for!

Any ideas?
