I bought a CD of scary halloween sounds at the drug store for $2.99. I'm just going through the sounds to make up something to play for the kiddies coming to our door tonight. This is the cheesiest sound effects CD that I've ever heard!

Drowning - obviously someone gargling into a microphone
Falling Down Well - a man kind of moaning/screaming as he walks away from the mic to simulate distance.
Falling Into Chemicals - Falling Down Well sound with static.
Dog Growling - obviously not a real dog...probably the same guy who's gargling and moaning.
Breathing - sounds more like an obscene phone call than anything ghoulish.
Finger Cutting - too crispy sounding for fingers...carrots maybe?
Groaning Man - I imagine what Jar has sounded like for the past week or two. :(

This had to have been made in somebody's basement!

The kids next door stuffed some old clothes with leaves, used a rubber mask for a face and put the mask in a hooded sweatshirt. Then propped the whole thing up against a tree. It looks great. I think that I'll just do a loop of the breathing and screaming and some sinister laughing and set up the CD player next to it. What fun!

So what are y'all up to for Halloween tonight?

I was working. And it rained all night long anyway (Pacific Northwest...go figure).

Trick-or-treating isn't as 'big' out here as it was were I grew up. But then again, child abduction wasn't as 'big' back home as it is out here either. I could go out by myself on Halloween night (back then) and stay gone for hours. No worriers. Nowadays, if I'm in the dark as to the whereabouts of one of my kids for more than 30 minutes, I'm gripped with fear.

Maybe that's why I don't enjoy scary movies anymore. Having young kids is scarier than anything I've seen Freddie or Jason do in a movie.

You should've just popped in a Finchy comp (which one? it doesn't matter). That's what I do when I want to hear some scary music. :D

ps - And just where was the Jim Clark Halloween '05 disc this year??????

I don't have kids, but I know exactly what you mean. If I did have kids, there's no way that I would let them run around on their own like we did when we were young. In fact, I saw a lot more older kids with parents this year than I have in the past. Halloween sure has changed over the years, that's for sure. But it hasn't dampened the spirit of the holiday. We still had more than 125 kids come to our door (I know this because we had enough candy for 125 and ended up "borrowing" candy from our neighbour when we ran out).

Oh, and the sound effects coming from the stuffed guy on the lawn were a big hit. Lot's of people actually stopped to take pictures of their kids with him.

Only just back after a few days off but I bought a budget CD with about 80 cheesy sound effects. Halloween in the UK didn't really exist much when I was a kid but now it's a big thing with parents taking their young ones around. We usually dress the house up and had about 80 kids round the other day.

The CD I have has some laughable sound effects and some genuine scary ones. One is just plain distressing what sounds like a grown man crying in an attic room. But I managed to gleam about 5 good ones and linked them all together and left it playing on repeat on a portable pretty loud in the garage, it gave a nice hollow echoey sound.

It worked really well hearing the kids shrieking as they came down the drive which is dimly lit. One little kid about 5 years old came running down the drive, gradually slowing to walk as he got nearer, then halting about 10 yards from the house and finally turning and running. He came back about 10 mins later with his parents in tow, ain't life great - probably scarred him for life.

Missed the Tuesday thread but here's a few that have been sat in my car the last week or so...

Wolf Parade - Apologies to queen Mary (the jury is still out on this one)
Spoon - Gimme Fiction (yeah I'll say, gimme more)
Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
LCD Soundsystem

Cheers
Mike

Ah, the garage. Great idea! I'll have to try that next year.

Re: scarring kids for life. Barry may get upset at me for telling stories out of turn, but I'm going to do it anyway. One of my best Halloween memories...once we were too old to go out and Trick or Treat, we used to have fun just trying to scare the kids coming to our door. One year, Barry put on this rubber pig mask with mirrored sunglasses underneath it so you couldn't see his eyes. Then he put on this black, hooded cape. I remember a couple of young boys coming to our door and when Barry opened the door with his mask on, one of the kids screamed, "he doesn't have any eyes!". And they both ran away from our house, screaming as they ran.

Still makes me giggle! :D

I forgot that I was wearing that at the time!

Much scarier than was the giant bird mask.
