The dbx SF-1 (if that's the speaker you have) was the company's first ever "Soundfield Imaging" loudspeaker. What that meant was that you'd get a solid, stable stereo image from anywhere in the room - even when walking between, and behind the speakers. None of the drivers used in the enclosures were anything out of the ordinary (the tweeters, in fact were downright cheap), but the manner in which they were crossed over, and the radiation pattern of the speakers resulted in an overall, pleasing sound. Note that there is a definite mannner in which to direct these speakers, with the loudest sound emanating from the enclosures directed towards the opposite speaker, and not the listener.

If you didn't also get the dbx electronic crossover that came with these speakers, you're never going to be able to realize their full potential. They were designed to work with that crossover, and actually sound pretty awful without it. You can monkey around with a standard EQ, to fix things up a bit, but you'll never get the same effect. I hope that you got one of those when you bought these puppies.

Retail price for the pair, when new, was $2,700 which went up to $3,300 when the SF-1a was introduced.

I found this old thread while searching for info on Soundfield 1s and figure it'd be a good place to ask a related question.

I have a pair of Soundfield 1As that I've been using for the past year or so as part of my main stereo driven by a Kenwood KR-9600 receiver. Even though I don't have a controller box, these sound pretty good to my ears. That said, I figured I'd try and find a controller box to see how much difference it made.

The original Soundfield Model One came with a controller labelled "dbx Model SFC-1 Soundfield Imaging Controller". The later 1A model came with a controller labelled "dbx Model 1A Soundfield Controller".

Does anyone know the difference between the model 1 and the model 1A and specifically whether using a model 1 controller with my model 1A speakers with yield positive results.

Thanks,
Dave.

There's a current thread on Audio Karma concerning your question and the DBX Soundfieldspeakers in general. It may be helpful.

That's me over at AK too. I thought I'd cast the net as wide as I could ;-)

Thanks,
Dave.

Holy smokes, I have a pair of these in storage. What a great speaker, what a great sound from those beauties. Mine are still in mint condition, just don't currently have a place for them. Had to pack them up carefully to keep them from deterioration because I moved to all multichannel systems over the years.

I am definitely going to have to find a place for these speakers, they sounded just wonderful when I used them last.

What a trip down memory lane!

Can anyone tell me what brand 10" woofers were used in the original SF-1 speakers?
Were they Phillips?
Thanks
