Hi there. I am going to invest in a sub and was hoping someone could give me some advice on whether to buy a cylinder or box sub. I will use it primarily to listen to music. I listen to a lot of electronic music which has a lot of quick (and often low) bass sounds, so a fast non sloppy response would be great.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Ian

Don't pay too much attention to the gimmickry of a subwoofer cabinet's shape. Truth is, this parameter will have very little real world effect on the subwoofer's performance. Cylinders can offer some space saving, but usually absorb more energy than cube cabinets.
If you want "fast, non-sloppy" response, try to find a sealed subwoofer (not ported or vented), and avoid subs that brag about long-throw or long excursion.

Thanks for the advice.
I was considering buying a SVS cylinder sub as it appears that the cylinders are cheaper than their box subs with the equivalent specs. It is also lighter which is good in my case beacuse it would save on shipping to Australia where I live.
Excuse my ignorance, but would one of these cylinders subs be "sealed"? If not, then could you recommend a small (around 10inch, no more than $700us) sealed sub that is of reasonable quality?
Thanks again.
Ian

Hello Ian,
Check this one out here (http://www.av123.com/products_product.php?section=subwoofers&product=1.1) I haven't heard it, but it gets great reviews, and has alot of useful features.

Don't think you'd want a 10" sealed sub, 12" is really the way to go (it's not that much bigger).
I'd recommend:

This can be bought at a few spots (check their dealer info) for under $700.

Or:

I built one of these for my parents - it's super easy, and sounded way better than the more expensive Paradigm PW-2200 I had at the time. Not even close. I don't be intimidated by the "kit" part....putting it together is a joke. And fun.
