Hi, I'm off to uni again this week. My laptop is gorgeous but its speakers are complete arse. I usually take my HiFi to Uni and play my music etc. through that, but I'm trying to save space. I don't need EXCELLENT sound, just something that's going to get most notes really well, not sound flat and crackly, like most computer speakers.

Are there any good sounding speakers I can use with a simple phono lead (same socket as headphones) that are small and carryable? Preferably a sensible price as well! I only need 2.0 really.

One of these might work:
Cambridge Soundworks (http://hifi.com/store/category.cgi?category=port_spkr)
or
Swan M200 (http://www.swanspeaker.com/product/htm/view.asp?id=3). You can get the M200 for $179usd from theaudioinsider.com
Both are powered systems so you can plug right in and go.

Hope this helps.

Hi, thanks! But I'm not sure about how I can get hold of them in the UK, or which ones to go for? Are there any Ukers here who can help?

If you want a small bookshelf type speaker You can buy just the T Amp form them and run Just about any speaker you want.(I have run a pair of studio 100s with this amp with fantastic results)The T-Amp by itself is $29.
av123.com has the ELT speakers on sale for $99 a pair,,worth a look.

Those speakers look cool but they're a bit too portable. I just want something smallish you see. Those are nice and small but I'm only goin to transport them once a term, so they don't need to be fold away or anything as far as that.
I really like the size of the harman karon soundsticks, if it wasn't for the fact that I had to buy the subwoofer as well. The satellite themselves are the kind of thing I'm interested in, well that size anyway!

Thanks, but what I don't understand is why I'd need the T-amp? Is it because these speakers don't come with an AC cable?

Uh, why not just order them from the internet sites I linked you to?
I'm sure they'll ship to the UK. I can't help you with which ones to go for as I have no idea what your ultimate application is. You have a number of choices from Cambridge and the Swans will serve quite nicely as monitors.

Yes.This gives you the option to purchace any speaker and use the T-amp to power them. The T-amp is small(will fit in the palm of your hand)and rated at 15 wpc into 4ohms.The swans TS posted look nice. The web site does not mention if they are powered.
