I saw Roger Hodgson last night. This is the third time that I've seen him solo. The first two times were really solo, just Roger, a guitar, a piano, and a keyboard. They were both fantastic shows. But, add a 40 piece orchestra to the mix and you get...magic.
Last night I saw Hodgson perform with a 40 piece orchestra. He played two hours of Supertramp songs rearranged for the orchestra. I can't begin to describe how fantastic this experience was. It was like hearing some of these songs for the first time. With the definate highlight coming at the end of the evening in the way of Fool's Overture. This song was meant to be played by an orchestra! It sent chills down my spine, it was so powerful.
From comments that Roger made during the evening, it sounds like this is the first time that he's played with an orchestra and I sure hope that it's not his last. He looked like he was having a lot of fun. Besides, this needs to be recorded on CD and DVD. What an amazing DVD this would make!!!
I checked his web site and it doesn't look like any more performances with an orchestra are scheduled. Last night's orchestra was made up of local musicians and he thanked someone who worked at the venue for the idea. Each time that I've seen him play has been at the same venue. So, maybe it was the venue staff who were responsible for arranging this spectacular evening. I sure hope that he takes this show on the road. Or, at the very least, comes back and does it here again. :D
