I saw Roger Hodgson last night. This is the third time that I've seen him solo. The first two times were really solo, just Roger, a guitar, a piano, and a keyboard. They were both fantastic shows. But, add a 40 piece orchestra to the mix and you get...magic.

Last night I saw Hodgson perform with a 40 piece orchestra. He played two hours of Supertramp songs rearranged for the orchestra. I can't begin to describe how fantastic this experience was. It was like hearing some of these songs for the first time. With the definate highlight coming at the end of the evening in the way of Fool's Overture. This song was meant to be played by an orchestra! It sent chills down my spine, it was so powerful.

From comments that Roger made during the evening, it sounds like this is the first time that he's played with an orchestra and I sure hope that it's not his last. He looked like he was having a lot of fun. Besides, this needs to be recorded on CD and DVD. What an amazing DVD this would make!!!

I checked his web site and it doesn't look like any more performances with an orchestra are scheduled. Last night's orchestra was made up of local musicians and he thanked someone who worked at the venue for the idea. Each time that I've seen him play has been at the same venue. So, maybe it was the venue staff who were responsible for arranging this spectacular evening. I sure hope that he takes this show on the road. Or, at the very least, comes back and does it here again. :D

You'd think this woulda been done already, since Supertramp's music should lend itself very well to the symphonic treatment...like YES' did. Traveling with that kind of ensemble is prolly a nightmare though...

Also October 8th at the Aladdin Casino in Las Vegas, both Dennis DeYoung and Alan Parsons each will be performing with the Las Vegas Philharmonic Orchestra.

Most shows like this don't travel with the orchestra. There are sometimes a few core musicians, but the rest are local. The arrangements are sent in advance so the musicians can learn them.

The musicians playing with Roger this weekend were all Toronto musicians.

I knew that Dennis DeYoung had recorded a CD and DVD with an orchestra, but I've not heard anything from it. A few months ago there was a symphonic Led Zeppelin show at the same casino where we saw Roger Hodgson. I didn't see it but, apparently, it was a like watching a Zeppelin cover band with an orchestra.

I wonder if this is the new trend for classic rock.

There are a few "classic rockers" whose sound easily lends itself to being played with an orchestra. Supertramp is one I'd love to see. Yes is another, though they've already done it and released it, (in fact Alan Parsons was one of the engineers on the disc). Same with the Moody Blues, they've worked with an orchestra. And although I've seen Parsons live some two dozen times, I have yet to catch a show with an orchestra. The Oct 8th show will be his second such show. Obviously the 'Project' sound meshes so nicely with the added orchestration in part because most of their albums feature the use of an orchestra.
I have a few cds, the music of Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Alan Parsons, among them, all done by a various orchestras. Some sound ok, some fabulous.
