Ive got an older technics slb2 belt drive that has been having some difficulties maintaining a constant steady pitch. I was wondering if there are any ways to tell if the belt needs to be replaced, or if it could something entirely different all together? maybe irregular current or something? any help would be appreciated.. this is all ive got for a while.

When you say "constant steady pitch" I assume you mean slow, fast, slow, fast, etc. - I'd say that's almost certainly the belt, and it'll drive you nuts!

And Tommys' right - it'll be easy to get one. I'm sure his link is good & I've used:

Good Luck!

This place sells turntable belts VERY CHEAP. Also great place to find belts for cassette decks. Sell belts by measurement though.

Measure the belt you have while sharply folded in half but not stretched. (in inches) Double that, then subtract about 10% (the old belt is stretched) and that's the length of belt you need. They provide mesurements for the width of the belt as well. Most turntable belts are the same width untill you get into the higher-end stuff.

If the new belt doesn't help. A shot of contact cleaner/lube from Radio Shack in the pitch control may help.

Thanks for all the good replies.. Havent had a chance to order a new belt yet, so my friend and i improvised by giving the belt a twist to tighten it up a little bit, and we put some surf wax on there too. Its been workin fine, but that new belt is definitely on my shopping list.

I hope I dont have any audiophiles cringing or turning in their graves
The guys at TnT audio would probably be proud.. : )

Old post, but I thought Id add this link just in case anyone could use it. It has measurements for a lot of the technics and panasonic turntable belts, if not all of them.

edit: you can buy them at this site too, but they are cheaper at the other one.. 3.29 verse 5.95 .
