Well, I've had this Zenith DVD Changer for about 7 years now. I'm surprised this unit performs the way it did the day one. But the problem is that It does NOT play CD-Rs. Then my VCR when out, so I decided to purchase Sony's SLVD-500P VCR/DVD combo. I was happy for about an hour, since I have some CD-R's I made from MY OWN CDs I don't have anymore(I park on the street). I used my Zenith and Sony's digital ouputs, since my Rotel sounds better to me. So, I was basically using then as transports, but the Sony unit would not play the first 1-2 seconds of the my CDs.

The question is that, If I buy brand new low-low budget DVD player, is there a chance of me experiencing the problem I had with the Sony Combo? I was always convinced that the sound would be exactly the same between my 2 units under the same conditions, since I'm using my receiver's DAC. Boy was I wrong, Sony sounded just terrible to me.

I don't really watch DVD's anymore, I just hated that I had to distribute my speaker-budget to 5 to 7 speakers instead of 2. So, I'm not concerned with progressive scan.

I just want to listen to my CD-Rs without any interuption. Should I buy a cheap DVD player or CD player with Digital Out at a Pawn shop? I know that this sounds really cheap on my part, but I'm trying to focus more on upgrading my analog and interconnect part of my system. Plus, it keeps me from stealing music from the artists, and friends with only CD-Rs, whether they are Jessica Simpson or Leonard Cohen.

...or so you can get an entry level DVD/Cd player and try it through your receiver's DAC. If it doesn't satisfy, you should be able to return it. Try that with a pawn shop.
