Turntable speeds

I know nothing about turntables.

If a turntable has speeds of 33 and 45 with a 7, 10 & 12 inch platter can you play a 78 or do you have to have that speed? Can you buy a "device" that would let you play a 78 on that type unit?

Thorens used to make an inexpensive turntable that would play 33 1/3, 45 and 78. Rega makes a 78 rpm only player. The 7,10 and 12 settings turntables used to have were for the automatic tonearm so it would know how far to move before lowering to the record and does not have anything to do with the speed. I do not know of any add ons for 78 rpm speeds. Welcome

...but, as markw stated, you need a 78rpm setting o-r i-t w-i-l-l s-o-u-n-d m-u-ch s-l-o-w-e-r and the pitch will drop roughly an octave or more...

Then we get into the whole stylus shape and how modern eliptical styli may bounce around the wider/deeper grooves or the cantilever itself may contact the record's surface...

So, no, there is no add-on device that will do this and folks who do have a collection of 78s(as I do) usually will have a tt/cart combo dedicated specifically for this purpose...and then of course we have the different EQ curves involved...don't ask...

And good luck trying to find someting to play those 16rpm Lithuanian language lessons...
