I am looking for a DVD recorder with a hard disk to replace my ageing VCR.

I have just discovered the LITEON HDD + DVD recorder (LVW-5045) with a 160 GB disk, and it records to and plays all disk formats. It is about half the price of the equivalent Pioneer player. However, I have not heard of LITEON before, and don't know what its quality reputation is like. Any ideas? Is it too good to be true?

Heres the web site:

This seems like a real good deal if you don't watch HD TV. As I previously posted I have a Lite ON DVD recorder & it wasn't very expensive and is easy to use. If you don't have HD TV it seems like a real good deal. If you do have HD TV or are planning to get it in the near future you'd be better off renting from you cable company an HD DVR & buying a cheaper DVD recorder or just buying an HD DVR that will also let you record DVD's.

If you don't have HD TV you are missing alot.

HD TV yet - I'm holding off a little until prices come down further.

This system sounds like a good deal if you don't have HD TV. Can you record 2 shows at the same time on it or just one at a time. Surprised the price is so low.

In regards to HDTV, I don't know your budget but you can get an excellent Mitsubishi 48" rear projection HD Ready TV for $1600 & get decent 48" HD Ready rear projections sets for as little as $950. You can also get a decent 30" HD Ready TV for about $700 or so but
I think you'll notice a more significant difference with an HD Set over 42 inches.

I can't really give much advice on this paticular set, but regarding lite on and quality issues. They are probably the largest optical drive manufacturer in the world. If not the very least they are top 3. I've used, and purchased dozens of lite on optical dries in the past, and have never had one failed. I've had plextor and samsung and sony drives costing much more that perform worse, and fail much sooner. So at the very least, this unit's built in dvd drive should be of the utmost quality.

The Pioneer with same hard disk capacity has dropped to almost the same price in my neck of the woods. Of course, for me the attraction of LITEON is the fact that it can handle any type disk, whereas the Pioneer cannot.
