I only have a couple of spins under my belt but thought it might be kinda fun to see if my intial impressions hold up after a few weeks. Those who haven't received copies yet stop reading now. Oh, I see you're still here. Don't blame me if my post influences your perceptions
Architecture In Helsinki - Do The Whirlwind
This song has it all - everything I've always hated about popular music circa 1982. Things haven't changed much since Amazulu, eh? A steady diet of this and I'd have to hire me a stylist.
Valina - Ship To Escape
Somewhere a high school marching band is missing its xylophone. You know how many damn candy bars you gotta sell for a new one? Song really doesn't go anywhere but oddly I still like it.
Bloc Party - This Modern Love
On the first spin I didn't even notice the song had changed until the vocals kicked in. I keep seeing this LP for $7.99. I can think of worse ways to spend eight dollars.
Rheostatics - The Tarleks
I've only heard a handful of their songs and all have been quite decent. Kinda like a Canadian SFA. Anyone here ever put together a Rheostatics sampler?
Spoon - Two Sides/Monsieur Valentine
Yeah, Spoon!
Beck - Scarecrow
Face it, Beck has spent the last two albums regurgitating his best two albums. Still a fun song but it doesn't equal his best work.
Mike Keneally & Metropole Orkest - Worrywart Spoonguy
This track makes me want to drive really fast . . . . . into that oncoming semi.
Modest Mouse - Bukowski
Man, I'm just not used to hearing this out of the album context. How do you guys feel about recording songs from good albums onto a CD-R, and then mixing it with other good songs from other good albums? Is this okay to do? Sometimes I think it's wrong. I'm an excellent driver. Yeah, an excellent driver.
Andrew Bird - Skin Is, My
weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
The Frames - Suffer In Silence
This has some potential to grow on me (if I can stay awake).
Mofro - The Wrong Side
Is this someone's idea of a sick joke? A rootsy Spinal Tap? Wait, Spinal Tap was funny on purpose. Had my cliche-per-minute meter pegged.
The Blue Van - I Want You
See? Yet another example of why bar bands should stick to covers. The world needs fun bar bands. No shame in that. I do like the Kinky guitar sound though, even if it is a blatant rip-off. Do you guys know "Paranoia"?
Secret Machines - Nowhere Again
I've liked this track from the first time I heard it. Reminds me of Deconstruction a lot. Never pulled the trigger on this because for some weird reason I keep thinking this is probably the only standout track on the album. Guess I should do a search here to see if that is in fact the case.
The Mars Volta - Umbilical Syllables
Ack! A hair-metal power ballad!
Bobby Bare Jr. - Strange Bird
Pretty cool song. Me likey. I need to hear a few more songs but it looks like a go based on this track. I like how the guitar solo is played on violin.
John Doe & Grant-Lee Phillips - Twin Brother
Not too exciting but not bad either. Could see this becoming a grower.
John Doe & Neko Case - Hwy 5
Very nice and better than the track before. I'll keep an ear out.
Antelope - Wen Ho Lee
Now we're getting somewhere! This is going straight to the top of my wishlist.
13 & God - Perfect Speed
Coulda been on Neon Golden. Coulda been the best song on Neon Golden.
The Coach & Four - In Transit
Saving the best for last, eh Davey? Nice progression and it flat-out rawks. I'll hafta dock half-a-point for the singer sounding a little too much like the dude from the Offspring but it's still the standout on this comp for me.

I did years ago.

It's from earlier albums. I like this mix a lot, but then again, I'm responsible for this:
Mike Keneally & Metropole Orkest - Worrywart Spoonguy
This track makes me want to drive really fast . . . . . into that oncoming semi.
I think I'm gonna be hearing that a lot . . .

A sick joke? Wow, I never thought of Mofro as rootsy Spinal Tap. Now that I think of it, I wish I had told Davey to use a different tune other than that one. I still think Lochloosa was good album. Anyway.....
If it's any consolation, I thought 13 & God sucked major hippo balls. Huge bohemoth hippo balls. The size of mountains. Yes, it really sucked.

Okay, I've had 3 spins now, so my opinion is as good/bad/indifferent as anyone else's. Here goes:
Architecture In Helsinki - Do The Whirlwind
Tom-Tom Club meets Sparks, with an odd dash of Bjork? Strangely, I like it. A very quirky beginning to a quirky mix.
Valina - Ship To Escape
It's alright. Possibly a grower. We'll see.
Bloc Party - This Modern Love
Like Slosh, I didn't realize the track had changed the first time I heard it. I just thought it interesting that Valina had decided to take their song in a different direction with a British singer. Actually, I like this song a lot more than the other one. Go figure.
Rheostatics - The Tarleks
I've always been a fan of WKRP in Cincinnatti. Not a huge fan of this song, though. But I am nuts about women who like off-beat music...so if the wife and kid ever boot me out of the house, I'm moving to the Great White North and becoming TA's stalker. Sorry, but that's the way it is.
Spoon - Two Sides/Monsieur Valentine
I really like this one. Is the rest of their new one like this? I suppose I should listen to the bonus tracks Davey sent...
Beck - Scarecrow
What Slosh said.
Mike Keneally & Metropole Orkest - Worrywart Spoonguy
Frank Zappa and the Mothers meet the Dixie Dregs, and crash head-on into a semi carrying a symphony orchestra. You know what? I've heard worse. Well, somewhat worse.
Modest Mouse - Bukowski
I may well be the lone heretic around here who doesn't dig MM. I don't know what it is. Maybe it's the guy's whiny voice? But every time I hear them, all I can picture is an emperor strutting around without his clothes.
Andrew Bird - Skin Is, My
Solid. This guy is a real talent.
The Frames - Suffer In Silence
Definite grower potential. Not great, but better than it seems at first blush.
Mofro - The Wrong Side
I like this, even though it's not my usual thing. The soulful vocal is spot-on. Reminds me of the heyday of Capricorn records and Wet Willie. Anyone else hear a little Jimmy Hall on this?
The Blue Van - I Want You
Dude, WTF? It's like the Kinks got together with the Animals and decided to cover Billy Idol. Or maybe the other way around.
Secret Machines - Nowhere Again
I love this frickin' song. But this is my only quibble with the (admittedly difficult) sequencing. The John Doe tracks should have gone here, and this one should have followed the Mars Volta.
The Mars Volta - Umbilical Syllables
Not bad stuff from a strange band. I have to respect a band that swings for the fences, even if they don't exactly click with me.
Bobby Bare Jr. - Strange Bird
Interesting stuff. I'll have to check out the rest of the album.
John Doe & Grant-Lee Phillips - Twin Brother
Powerful vocal and a soul-baring folk reminiscence from the former X-man. Me likey.
John Doe & Neko Case - Hwy 5
A more involving tempo, but not as much emotional honesty. Does Neko sound a little like Exene, or is it just me?
Antelope - Wen Ho Lee
Good, but not great. Not entirely sure what Slosh is so torqued up over. Maybe I'll pay closer attention on next listen.
13 & God - Perfect Speed
Hafta like this one.
The Coach & Four - In Transit
Hafta like this one even more.

13 & God - Perfect Speed
Coulda been on Neon Golden. Coulda been the best song on Neon Golden.
Yeah, and I coulda woke up this morning and found monkeys flying out of my ass. You dink! That is a nice song and all, but now you're talking nonsense! Absurdity, balderdash, fatuity, gobbledygook, hooey, ludicrousness, poppycock, tripe and last but not least, twaddle. Don't think that I don't respect your opinion though ;)
Hey, what did you copy this post from? How come it doesn't word wrap? Or is it just me?

Secret Machines - Nowhere Again

Yeah, you're probably right although I did at one time have the John Doe and Neko before yours. The other John Doe was a late addition because JDaniel and nobody both had nom'ed that album, but I talked to them and was going to use the JD&Neko as a nobody tune and a Mary Gauthier song from JDaniel, which is a very nice album btw, but I just didn't like the feel with Mary in there so decided to mix it up with 2 John Doe cuts since I love that song about his brother and also got a late arriving package from Whooptee with that great tune and, well...I just kind of gave up on that middle section starting with the Mofro tune. Sorry. That Secret Machines song is fun. I used it on my half gone comp last year too.
Neko does sound like Exene on that song. A little too much like her actually, although I do really like it. She probably wanted to play it that way since John and Exene wrote the tune, and it does sound a lot like vintage X. But still, I wish they'd made it a little more Neko and less Exene. Maybe Exene was gonna sing it originally but couldn't for some reason so Neko was asked to take her place? Who knows? Maybe I should read up on it before making silly conjectures? Maybe monkeys will fly....oh, wait, I already used that one today...:)
BTW, what did you get for a bonus disc? Is it Gimme Fiction + Bonus Tracks? I might've mixed up the packages, but if you like it, that's ...

I believe the disc said Gimme Fiction Bonus Tracks. Sorry, don't have it with me. I'll check it out when I get home.
Great job on the comp overall, despite my kvetching and nit-picking. Muchas gracias.

Hey Davey, is your new avatar from the Partridge Family bus?
Busted! Thought I could celebrate my David Cassidy love in private, but guess it's out now. Hehehe, guess they did go for that Mondrian paint scheme, eh? I have a fun and cool, hand-welded aluminum tube racing bicycle with a Mondrian paint job on the top tube, but now I'm gonna be forced to think of it as a stinky old bus. Thanks alot FA. Come on get happy my ass! :(
