Just tested my new Scientific Atlanta HD 8300 DVR out and it does make external DVD or VHS copies and plays 5.1 digital surround sound. The previous Scientific Atlanta 8000 DVR did not do either of these functions even though it was supposed to do them because apparently the cable company did not program these sets to do so.
