Can I use my Sony MDR-V700DJ for critical mixing and recording in a recording studio?

Of course you could....but would you want to? If you need a closed headphone you might want to look into the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro. Apparently it sounds very good for a closed headphone.

Now if ambient noises are not going to be present in your environment, and your enviornment is going to tolerate audiable music in the studio, then I would go with an open headphone.

I personally like Grado's products. I have a set of SR-80's, which I picked up for $80 at Cambridge Soundworks. They sound incredible for $80. I am considering upgrading to the SR-325i at some point (~$300). You might also want to look into the Sennheiser HD-600's ($300-350). Considered by many to be the best balance for critical listening and studio monitoring. They are quite ineffecient though (300 ohms), so be on the lookout for a good headphone amp or equipment. If you want to go further you could even try the HD-650's, or you could go one step down to the HD-580's.

On the other hand the Grado's I mentioned are extremely efficient (32 ohms), easily driven by anything including all portables. One interesting alternative is the Sennheiser HD-590. It is relatively effecient (~150 ohms I believe) and sounds very live...kinda bright though. They are more affordable than the 600's, and offer a more exciting sound...though maybe not what you would want for studio monitoring.

As recently stated in Stereophile, "headphone selection is an extremely personal matter". I completely agree. Once you figure out what will work for your studio setup, I suggest listening to several phones, including the ones listed above and maybe some AKG's (many use them in studios), and figuring out what YOU like.

Good luck!

Can I use my Sony MDR-V700DJ for critical mixing and recording in a recording studio?

No, they will quit working once they enter a studio. Something about the magnetic field or something.

No. You need to get yourself a pair of LIRPA Inv-1's. They are invisible wireless headphones that need no source component. Send me $5k and I'll sell you mine.

u know when all the other posters were screwing around with you I was somewhat pissed at them and was about to post telling them to give you a break, but DUDE, the webpage u gave us says "Studio Monitor Series DJ HeadphonesMDR-V700DJ"
STUDIO MONITOR...
u might however, want to use a couple of them B&W Nautillus held to your head with heavy duty wire for studio sessions. Granted they'll feel a tad uncomfortable, but they are definately the best sounding u can get...

IMHO, this model from Sony is better suited for Studio use than the DJ version:

Just from our tests here. :)

The specs are the same for the MDR-V900 and the MDR-V700DJ. So wouldn't they sound the same?

No - quite different in sound, the V900 has Diamond Evaporated Diaphragms hence the extra $100.00 increase. The DJ version has more of a voicing towards bass as well, whereas the V900 is more neutral sounding. Still, best to listen for yourself, and be the judge.

I think you can certainly use the V700 as a monitor phone. But it's got a chopped treble and a boosted midbass so you won't hear a lot of high end information, and the low bass tends to get lost in the midbass. Rather like a cheap pair of speakers. If you're mixing for the low end of consumer audio (mini systems, etc), I suppose the V700 might work. It's not very comfortable either, but does look cool though :p

If you're mixing for a wide range of speakers, then I've been told that the Beyerdynamic DT770-250 is a good bet, and I find them physically comfortable but sonically very fatiguing. The HD280 is comparatively neutral, and I've heard varying degrees of happiness about it for mixing purposes. I could take it or leave it but my uses are listening, not mixing. Many guys seem to like the Ultrasone range too for mixing purposes.

I wouldn't recommend the bose triports. You can easily find something priced less than their $150 that blows them away. Try some sennheisers.

I can tell you right now that the Sennheisers will blow the 700s out of the water! I know, I have them both. Even my senn px200s sound much better. I bought the senn 580s to replace the 700s because i was sick of getting headaches after 20 minutes of use. Buy the senns, you will realize how much you were loosing with the 700s.

BTW - The 700s are great for djs, I use them all the time for mixing because all i need to hear is the high hats or drums. People should realize that is exactly what these phones are made for, dont buy them for casual listening. THEY ARE DJ HEADPHONES!

I currently own the MDR-V600 now but is this headphone good for professional studio monitoring for critical recording and monitoring instruments?

If you have to ask us the answer is that you should not be in the recording industry. Though it might explain why the vast majority of recordings are garbage.

-FloYou obviously don't know this guy, do ya? ;)

Some people come here to ask advice. Others to give advice. Still others who cannot maintain relationships with people use it as a substitute for those relationships.

The first ones you had were far better. Get them back.
