I only have about 6 feet of wire connecting the speakers and the receiver. It won't make a difference if I use thicker wire right?

For that length of speaker wire, 18 gauge is just fine.

If you have power hungry speakers I would go with a larger gauge. 14 gauge should be fine for nearly any speaker at that length.

18 awg should be fine. I always use 12 or 14 depending on the runs though. It doesn't hurt to go bigger, just don't go too small :-)
