components heating up

I heard that a component will operate to its maximum capability once its been running a while and had a chance to heat up, is this true?

The reason i am asking this is because i have a set top box that intermitantly turns its self back on after i have turned it off via the remote. So i decided instead of waiting for it to happen everytime i turn it off, i will just leave it on all the time.

My STB stays on for months at a time with no apparent ill effects. For that matter, my NHT subwoofer amp stays on all the time as does my BFD.
