Hello everyone this is my first post. I have quite the dilema. A few years ago I was one of the sorry suckers who puchased a philips dvdr985 dvd recorder. Unlike most of america i prefer a laptop as opposed to a desktop, therefor i have no conventional method of recording tv shows i miss. I still have the dvd recorder, and 2 years ago i purchased an apex dvd player. Now heres the kicker. I was wondering if there was any possible method of converting a dvd player into a dvd recorder. I dont care how time consuming the methods may be or how insane they seem. IWILL TRY IT!!! But this can only be accomplished if one of you knowlegable fellows out there would be gratious enough to share some geek know-how. Please help me!!!

First off, what are you trying to accomplish by converting an Apex DVD player into a DVD recorder? I don't understand what you're getting at. You already have DVD recorder, you watch TV through a laptop, and you want to record TV broadcasts. Shouldn't your Philips DVD recorder allow for that?

Converting an Apex player into a recorder makes no sense whatsoever, given that 1) you already have a DVD recorder; 2) those Apex DVD players are living on borrowed time to begin with; and 3) it's probably cheaper and less aggravating to just buy a new DVD recorder. The steps involved in converting an Apex DVD player into a recorder are probably impossible for an average consumer, given that the firmware is not something that you can reprogram yourself, and you need to install a whole slew of different things that your DVD player case was not designed to accommodate.

If you prefer your laptop for TV viewing, why not just use an outboard video capture card and record it to your hard drive?
