2X and 4X CD upsampling what does it do?

I got no response in the Digital forum so am posting here.

Yamaha ( I don't know about others) lists this as a feature that improves overall sound.

Does anyone know if DVD players with this feature produce better sound from a CD?

I think you mean oversampling..and no, it makes no real difference.

Just for reference, my car CD player has 8x oversampling. I seriously doubt it's a better player than any of my home players :)

Thanks for your reply. Yamaha refers to it as upsampling. I found a few articles on it, and upconversion and oversampling since posting. (simaudio.com/upsampling) was interesting.

Oversampling has to do with the digital conversion. I believe for example, an 8x oversampling CD player will multiply the sampling rate 8 times. The filter on the CD player, applied to the higher frequency of sampling will essentially make for better sound. Might be hard to hear a difference though.
