Okay friends. It's Q&A time here in Movieland. Once or twice a week it's poll time from the film vault so I'm gonna be firing out the polls. Come heavy and don't bring no weak stuff in the paint.

Of those mentioned, I would definitely say that Empire Strikes Back is the clear winner for me. Although Hot Shots, Part Deaux was very good. :D

Some other very good sequels in my book would be:

Spiderman 2
Bourne Supremacy

Not sure if you could classify these as sequels but,

Kill Bill, Vol. 2
LOTR

could vote for any of those depending on my mood... which, given marty moving production of The Departed from boston to nyc and all the stuff have been reading, and some fellow actor buds auditioning for minor roles in it, of which i, of course, am not right for, HA, like i couldn't pass for an IRISH mob member... c'mon... whatever! IF Heston played a MEXICAN! Connery played a RUSSIAN! Costner's played an AMERICAN! Kam could play an IRISH cop.. ok, rant over, now back to the post....

So the mood is swinging me heavily towards The Godfather II (which i realize is made by coppola, but he's a scorcese fan too, and goodfella's is the same genre and often mentioned with the same breath).

The only sequeal ever to win the big Oscar (well, I guess LOTR won last year, didn't it???)....if you put the other 4 all together they still aren't as great as the Godfather II.
Honorable mention to "Jaws 2", "Nightmare on Elm Street 4", and "Wrath of Khan". Oh, and Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness....

(Goodfella's mentioned in the same breath???)

For the sake of simplicity I'd say there are two types of sequels, those sequels like Back to the Future II (my 80s nod) Empire, and Godfather which directly build off the story, characters, and action of the original movie. Those sequels tend to be better quality, etc. Then there are the sequels that just give you more of the same, like another Nacy Drew mystery, same characters or premise, different plot or setting, and for that category I would point to Terminator 2 and Aliens, which happens to be one of my favorite movies (again, an 80s nod). Therefore, Godfather and Empire are going to be the best sequels of the list.

Terminator 2 was the only movie that I ever went to the theater and paid full price twice. At the time, I think it was 1991, Arnold was at his pinnacle. Everyone was on the A'nod bandwagon and to me, this was the movie where the special effects started to become believable. Sure starwars I and II had good moments for special effects for their time, but T2 is where it finally became real. I mean every single moment in that movie where special effects were used were done awesome. If you were seeing T2 for the first time today, you would not know that it was made 14 years ago. The intro was phenominal, the storyline was incredible, and the ending was, in a way tearful. Near the end, I remember watching it and thinking, hey, his arm got ripped off in that machine, I sure hope there is a part 3. But we all know that T3 didn't stand a chance of being really good after following in T2's footsteps.

Brother, that's hard! Empire was the best of the SW flicks (of course, the last three have sucked so that's not saying a lot :p), therefore Aliens is my pick. This movie just grabbed you by the short and curlies right out of the box and didn't let go until Ripley (in a tiny T-shirt and tighty whities no less)layed down to do her best Michael Jackson impression. Aliens, by a, umm...hair.

The best part in Aliens is when Bill Paxton is saying, "were all going to die, were all going to die, I don't mean to rain on your parade but were not going to last six hours let alone six days." Then Ripley says "this little girl has survived" and then Bill Paxton says "well why don't you put her in charge." I may not have stated word for word properly, I'm just going on memory but you get the drift. One of the funniest parts ever, sci fi, comedy or otherwise.

There were so many great lines in that movie, and most were from Bill Paxton.

I used to say Superman 2. But after watching it recently, it just doesn't hold up as well as the original. The films were made back to back, with Richard Lester replacing Richard Donner during the second. The seams really show on the stuff Lester did, and his parts are pretty obviously tacked on. What could've been...
So, how 'bout these-

Empire Strikes Back
X-men 2
Spiderman 2
Star Trek 2: Wrath of Khan
Lethal Weapon 2
Terminator 2
Aliens
Rambo: First Blood Part 2 (some of the action sequences just kick butt!)

I think Empire has to be the best by far.

The original was definitely ground breaking, but everything was shifted to high gear in the sequel.

Now It's starting to come back to me. I'm starting to think Aliens should be in my collection just for all the Bill Paxton comedy.

"hey vasquez... you ever been mistaken for a man?"
"no... have you?"

bill paxton in a james cameron movie, and it's gonna be funny... terminator, aliens, true lies, titanic.. all either funny or funny on the unintentional comedy scale.

Well i voted for Terminator 2, since the movie is just absolutly amazing with special effects, storyline etc... The best trilogy or movie of all times i think is LOTR, but thats not really a sequal ?!?!

This poll came out just as I was about to go out of town. It reminded me of a standardized test - ACT, SAT, LSAT and Bar exam. You can generally eliminate all but 2 answers fairly quickly, but then you have to agonize over the remaining 2. For me the remaining 2 were GFII and Aliens. I went with Aliens simply because it's fun to watch repeatedly. I thoroughly enjoyed GF and GFII, but find that I have to be in the right mood or frame of mind to watch them after having seen them several times. My pick, then, is based solely on entertainment value to me rather than the absolute best sequel.

"The Empire Strikes Back" has won as best movie sequel as voted on by the knotheads here on Fave Films Forum. To tell the truth... I'm quite surprised by the results. TESB has allways struck me as the least of the first three. But obviously a lot of folks disagree with me round here. Well, da pipples has spoken...

Thanks for playing....
