do they just ad more power to the fronts some how? like run the left and right from your reg 5.1 amp or 6.1 amp into it and then it boosts the power and send it back out as 2 channels again?

so like lets say you have a 80 watt yamaha 6.1 and you want more power for the fronts. you could run a 80 x 2 integrated amp and get 160 watts a channel for the fronts?

Integrated amp is a receiver without a tuner. Usually, however, have better amplifier section.

You are talking about a separate amplifier. You can do this as long as you have pre-amplifier outputs to connect to. I think the RXV640 has main pre-outs to connect a different amplifier, while the 1400 on up have full pre outs for all channels, so you could essentially use 3 external two channel amps, or a 5, 6, or 7 channel.

Unless you are really willing to dump some $$ into an amplifier, you will probably be better off just buying one of the larger Yamaha receivers. Don't get hung up on buying amplifiers or receivers on watts only, you will set yourself up to be screwed over.

I think you have a misconception here, perhaps. You may be thinking that two amps are put in series to increase power? That is not the case.
If you use different amps to the fronts, you MUST use the pre amp out to the second amp, or else you will blow it up.
There is no real need, usually, for second amps.
