I'm curious.

I run mostly vintage, a Dual 604 TT, Hafler DH-110 pre (maybe not vintage but certainly old), a Sansui TU-217 tuner, and a Marantz 1152dc amp section pushing slightly modified DQ-10s'.

Heck the only modern unit I have is a cd/dvd player, a Philips 951-something or the other.

I have to admit, I'd sure like a remote on the pre, and a good quality cd player, maybe tubed like Justlisten2s'. Other than that, I like my sound.

Anyone?

The closest piece that I have to being vintage is a McIntosh MA 6200 Integrated. It's sounds great, but the remote is the only issue! I was thinking of the remote from Space-Tech-Lab but it's pretty expensive. I'm still looking for a high quality alternative.

The only items that qualify under the Vintage catagory would be my Dahlquist DQ-10s. Although I do power them with NAD 2155 amplifiers from the same era.

I also run a late 80s Systemdek IIX turntable.

My PS Audio IV preamp. With it's seperate high voltage supply, and a true passive mode, for me to find a replacment would cost 1000's. It's also got a audoiphile grade phono preamp that's fully user adjustable with resistors.

My complete 'bedroom' system is vintage. I purchased most of the pieces off of Ebay to replicate my first system I had back in 1978. Nothing fancy, nor particularly great sounding, but brings back fond memories:

Pioneer SX-780 receiver
Pioneer CT-F700 cassette deck
Technics SL1800mk2 turntable (Shure V15 Type IV cartridge)
Quadraflex ST-19 speakers (Pacific Stereo house-brand)

I've also got 2 reel to reel decks. One an Akai, and 1 a Kenwood. Can't remember the model #s off the top of my head though...

I'm also into 'vintage' (if there is such a thing) portable CD players. Sony D-5, D-15, etc.

Yamaha T-1, they don't make them like they used to.

No they don't, Last year, I "Upgraded" to a multi-channel Digital Home Theater setup. It was fun watching movies but it really took the life and dynamics out of my listening pleasure. In addition, it was fully digital so I lost ability to use my Phono stage and my VCR.

That lasted for 6 months when I finally returned everything back to two channel stereo. I've never looked back. The sound is so much more pleasing to my ear than the multichannel digital.

Most of my equipment is 10-20 years old. And my youngest hardware consists of analog 2CH vacuum tube equipment I assembled from kits.

Got a couple, but the one that sounds best to me has a Marantz 2265B receiver, Teac X1000R reel-to-reel, Dual 1019 table w/Shure cartridge and baby Advent speakers.

Original owner of a pair of Advent New Large Utility speakers. A little beat up, but sounding fine in my secondary system. Original woofer surrounds are fine. Bought on sale at Tech Hifi in February of 1978 as my high school graduation present. This system also includes a Technics SLB-20 manual belt drive TT with Stanton 500E pickup from 1986. In my main system, I have a Thorens TD-165 MkII TT I bought new in 1984.

NAD tuner, preamp and 2200 power envelope amp. Rega 3 turntable. My speaker are custom made folded horns made by a company that does comercial PA applications. My speakers were one-of-a-kind, made by the owner as a hobby and to see if anyone would be willing to use them for home. They are 5 ft tall and have dual 12" woofers, 6 inch driver and 2 inch tweeters. They kick A--!!! A lot of my old album are very good condition, I have done side by side with CD's and MOST poeple will pick the turntable over the CD. I have shopped looking for a new system and just have been able to find anything that comes close.

Pioneer SX-1250
Pioneer SX-780
Sansui G-7700
Sansui AU-D11II integrated amp w/ Sansui TU-S77X tuner.

Receivers and Integrated amp routed to an Audio Authority model 410 amplifier switcher then out to a pair of Cerwin Vega D-7 speakers (circa 1988).

Dual 506 and Technics SL-230 TT's run thru the SX-1250.

Teac V-2RX (circa 1984) cassette deck runs thru the G-7700. (never used however. In fact, I have no idea where my cassettes are.)

I'm not much of a tuner freak as I rarely listen to the radio anymore.

Primary listening is done from a Sony CDP-C325 5 disc CD player (circa 1991) run thru the AU-D11II integrated.

Sennheiser HD-590 headphones for that intimate experience.

Someday I'd like to upgrade the CD player but this thing just keeps on going and going and going and.........

Darren

Oh, I've got a Sansui G-4500 in the garage for when I'm out there for extended periods of time.

We bought these new when we were newlyweds and still love to listen to them:

Mcintosh C28 Preamp
Mcintosh MC2105 Amp
B&O Beogram 3000 Turntable
AKAI AT-K03 Tuner
AKAI GXC-760D Cassette Player
and, the final touch...
JBL Paragon Speaker System

I love to sit back in the bentwood rocker after a tough day at work and relax in front of the JBL, but it really would be nice to have a remote too...

Yamaha T-1, they don't make them like they used to.

I've had my Yamaha T-1 since 1978 and have never looked back - or should I say forward! My other vintage stuff from 1978 includes a Quad 405 power amp and Nakamichi 410 pre-amp, all sounding and performing as new. Here's the rest: Thorens mk166 mk2 table (1985), NAD cd (1987), ADS 1230 speakers (1983). I've been tempted to purchase newer equipment but always pull back after realizing that I'm still satisfied.

I had the infinity kappa 9 [very know i think] late 80ties. Also synthese 3 speakers 80ties to. And currently i'm using the b&w 802 s80 with highpass alignment filter. Speaker is from 1980 september 23 :D

I had newer speakers like the infinity reference 11i,Driade 103 mkII [NICEEE],and the big boy Visaton DSM atlas MKII [metric 1m 80cm high] I've come to the conclusion that a speaker build in the 80ties or what the hell 70ties. Are THE BEST products compared to the speakers the build now.

For instance the b&w 802 s80 i bought them for 600euro a pair from a good [audio]friend of my. Just buy for that money a speaker new in the store that can surpassed them i dare yah i DOUBLE dare you all. What i'm trying t say is that a speaker that costed 10000dollars [just a example] ARE MUCH BETTER SOUNDING than then the 10000dollars speakers in this present time. The building quality has been degraded...with the years, offcourse there are better speakers out there than the ones from the 80ties..but you will have to search very hard to get the same quality for the same price.

With other words
Vintage the best....in my opinion,at those times the build quality...now at this time yeah the do it to for a 25k [figure of speech]

A lot of old units out there!

Some nice old stereo equipment too :p .

I looked up that space-tech-lab unit - boy at $680 you're not kidding. Too bad someone didn't come up with a motor unit that you could fit onto the volume shaft. I'd even be willing to have a cabled remote. Are we lazy, just spoiled, or what.

And a real JBL Paragon user? I'd love to hear that beautiful thing play. Does it sound as good as it looks?

What's vintage in your system
My garage system is mostly vintage, consisting of Double New Advents (late 70s), Threshold Stasis amp ('81), Pioneer TX-6200 tuner (70s), Pioneer PD-54 CDP ('93), Sony Cassette (late 80s) and DIY attenuators.

Yamaha T-1, they don't make them like they used to.

I'm another satisfied Yamaha T-1 owner. I also have a Yamaha CT-44 analog tuner that's large with a black faceplate and nice wood case. My guess is it was made for the Canadian market because that's what the box suggests and the similar units selling in the US at the time had silver faceplates.

I also have a Marantz 112 tuner, Akai GXC 730D cassette deck, and Sansui AU-5900 integrated amp at work that make for a nice vintage system. No speakers though. I use a pair of Grado SR-60 headphones. The headphone amp in the Sansui is far better than the one in the preamp in my main 2-ch system at home.

I had a Marantz 6100 turntable I kept around for a backup, but I gave it to my former high school band director and friend. He has a vintage Marantz system with receiver and tape deck that he bought new in the 70s. He already had a 6100, but he always wondered what he would do if it ever died. I thought he deserved a little peace of mind.

Howdy Pete,

Yes, the JBL Paragon does sound as good as it looks. In fact, in the right company (Suzanne) and with the right album (like Amad Jamal's "POINCIANA") on the B&O, it sounds even better in the dark!!!!!!!!!

I see Pioneer is quite a popular brand.
A couple of years back I bought a Pioneer system:
Pioneer SA-740 amp
Pioneer TX-540 tuner
Pioneer something timer
Pioneer something casette decks x 2
Pioneer something record deck.
It all cost me £5 ($9)
The casette decks didn't work
I sold the record deck on ebay for £56, about $100! Can't believe anyone would pay that sort of money for a plastic deck, though I have to admit it worker very well.
The vintage gear I now run is the Pioneer amp and a Bang & Olufsen Beogram 3000 and a pair of B&O Beovox 1702 speakers. Fab sound! Unfortunately the rubber band has stretched and I'll find out soon if I can get hold of a replacement. Should'a kept the Pioneer!

I'm down to a Marantz 2230 that I use in the bedroom for a true "vintage" piece. I used to have a pair of Wharfedales that were the size a Buick and weighed about the same. They represent another in a long list of "Why didn't I keep that?" My Mission 780 Argonauts from the mid '80's don't really count, although at almost 20 yrs old you would think they would :D.

Geez, I'm gettin' old...

Hey Pete some nice vintage stuff there. I was stationed in Germany in the mid 70's and picked up a Marantz 4400 quad receiver w/ all the options, (4) JBL L-65 Jubal speakers, Teac A-450 cassette deck, Dual 1249Q turn w/4 channel cartridge, JVC 4 channel equalizer and a Dokorder 1140 reel-to-reel (traded later on like a dummy). Also a spare Sansui 9090DB receiver, Technics SL-D2 turntable, Realistic 8-track rec/player later on.
That Marantz though is my "baby"...retailed for $1200 new in 1975.

let's see...recently I picked up a marantz 4230 receiver from Stealitback.com, actually all in one piece and functioning(though faceplate beat up--anybody with a faceplate to offer?), and then a pair of Celestion 3's, a non working NAD 7225Pe receiver, a working NAD CD player of same vintage, and most modern of all, a Luxman CD player whose number I can't recall.

In my earlier adulthood I had at various times; the old Advents, god knows their name, but heavy and solid as oxen; a beautiful Dual turntable, top of the line manual with rosewood?teak? finish; and in college, an old Yamaha receiver that had those funky rectangular knobs and god knows why that left the roost.

I suppose my Dynaco MK3's would qualify as vintage if they weren't so modified. Only the transformers and output tubes are the same. I'm still using 6550's although they are not the original tubes.

I got the audiophile but again in 2002 and have been doing some upgrading. But as of then my system consisted of ...

Phase Linear 400 amp, 1978
Apt Holman preamp, 1979
Denon TU-500, 1979
B&W DM7 speakers, 1980
Audio Technica Signet cartridge, 1989
Technics SL-PS70 CDP, 1992
Realistic LAB-2200 turntable, 1993

The Denon is still going strong and sounds great. The Apt Holman is still in use as a phono stage only; the Realistic is also still in use; (shows how much I care about vinyl).

The B&W are still around and occassionally in use, though not in my main system; (incidentally, they totally suck today -- absolutely no dynamic capability -- I can't believe they haven't deteriorated from when I bought they way back when).

I still use and enjoy my Sony EL 7 Elcaset deck. I have a Technics SL1000 MK Turntable. I think my amp and pre are getting to be vintage. Denon POA 2200 amp and a Denon PRA 1100 pre amp.

Still sounds fantastic to this day. Of course the Arcam CD 73 is a big help here.

My Wharfedale Vanguards are updated versions of the E70. The Vanguard is a three way and has just one midrange driver (a better one) and more bandwidth 40hz-23khz. But the E series and the Vanguards are wonderful rockers and fast and LOUD.

The Vanguards look similar except the Tweeter is higher and the one mid driver is below the tweeter. http://www.hi-fiworld.co.uk/hfw/oldeworldehtml/wharfedalee70.html

I have the Pioneer DSS-9 speakers with the "graphite modulus" 12" woofer and 5" "graphite modulus" squakers and ribbon tweeters. They were very exceptional for their price in 1987. I Also have AR-3as (1972) for surround and Infinity RSbs (1981) for rear, and a Ramsa WR8210 (1984) mixer for fun.

I'm very sorry I lost my Dynaco MkIIIs.

It's all hooked up to a Pioneer Elite VSX-59TXi receiver (current flagship model) with an Infinity Beta C360 center channel, and a pair of Rythmik Audio DirectServo subs and it all rocks seriously!

I have a Pioneer 3000 X/YA Reciver, a Pioneer Turntable and a pair of Pioneer Semi-Floorstanding Speakers all handed down from my parents. They bought this stuff in about 1980 so i guess it could be described as vintage. All sounds great and goes well with DVD player and bookshelf speakers (which are used a rears).

Im considering some kinda multi channel amp (http://www.caryaudio.com/products/cinema/5.shtml) now.

BTW those mids in me ole mains are apparently actually some boron composite.

I'm pretty green in the current hifi market, but i was in it 35 years ago, and ever since i been doin pro audio, including soundesign and mixing for numerous projects; hell we all gotta make a living, it's all i've known most o my life

Peace and luv

BTW this list below is my little system at home, not what I use day to day professionally, and if'n yas gotta ask, my daily stuff is generally very current pro stuff, and changes from day to day according to the gig, but it's my job to insure that it always makes a great noise, whether it be a fiber feed or something from a very hi-q local source. Kinda like flyin a hellicopter via an assistant mefinks sometimes :D

I have a pair of Altec Lansing 887A CAPRI speakers that were made in 1974. I bought them for 5 bucks at a swapmeet, and they work perfect! The surrounds aren't rotted or anything. Actually, until Nov last year, it all was 1980 vintage. I still have and use a Harksound turntable, Harman Kardon cassette deck, and a Hi-Fi JVC VCR which (touch wood) are still functioning fine. Unlike a heap of laser driven products (CD & DVD) which have already died on me! Why is it that middle of the range stuff which is 25 years old has given lots of service and still going strong, but newer technology has already been replaced several times?

Until recently I also occassionaly used a 1963 HMV valve radiogram to play 78s. Anybody remember 78s? I inherited some, but they were too cumbersome and noisy to use so I donated them to a record museum.

:D Hi

I have grandmas HMV 8+8 twin channel record player, and I have 2 pairs of technics speakers
The older pair i think is the closed enclosure, as the label says National Technics and the speakers are made in japan. They consist of a dome tweeter and horn midrange and 10inch woofer. I replaced the tweeters and woofers. The speaker cabinet is almost box like 44cm wide, 42cm deep and 69cm high.

The taller technics around 3ft (92cm) are 3 way with a 12inch woofer.

See pics below.

My equipment is all pretty old due to never seeming to have the money to upgrade, I've had my Technics RS-TR265 tape player from new in 1988. My CD player was purchased second-hand about six years ago, a Technics SLP 310 (badly needs replacing, poor quality) and my only amp I've had for well over a decade since new is a very modest and not very good Technics SU-V500 and my deck is very ancient a Dual 505-2, excellent but in need of a new stylus. However, I bought a pair of vintage Celestion Ditton 66 Studio Monitors from the 1970s on Ebay last December and whatever I play on this system sounds brilliant!! (I am currently posting in speakers re a fault on these but they still sound beautiful despite the fault). These speakers have pulled this whole system together in a way you would not think possible, even worn out old tapes sound brilliant. I highly recommend these speakers - they usually retail about £600-£700, I managed to get mine for £200 as they look a bit tatty but I've been told that to get similar quality speakers on today's market I would have to expect to pay £5000! I understand the smaller Celestion Ditton 44s are quite good too for their size. :)

My Conrad Johnson Sonographe amp is probably the oldest of everything, and it works very well. The amp will probably be next on the list to get replaced unless I get a tube Preamp first.
Just the other day on Audiogn I missed a matching solid state Sonographe Preamp for a couple hundred bucks.....they would have looked very nice together.

In 1937 Altec acquired the domestic theatre sound service and maintenance business of Electrical Research Products, Inc., the Western Electric subsidiary. Altec Lansing was formed in 1941 when Lansing Manufacturing Co., a nearly bankrupt west coast loudspeaker company, was purchased for $50,000 cash. Altec Lansing went to work for the Navy on magnetic airborne detection equipment. Much of the work in this period was done in association with GSI, the company from which Texas Instruments was to spring. At war's end, Altec Lansing continued its steady growth pattern and led the way to large scale development of public address systems and to a conscientiousness of acoustics that had never existed before.

Recently modified my system. Was running 4 BOSE 501 series II's (from 1973, back when BOSE stuff was decent) and a pair of Bang & Olufsen Pentas (1988). Used a Yamaha control amp for the self powered Pentas. Had a Sansui 7000 4-channel receiver (circa 1977) for the 4 BOSE's. Ran the Pentas for front channel L/R, had 2 Bose's for front L/R, but placed them on the sides. Had 2 BOSE's for back surround L/R. The sound was impressively good, but the 1970's sound around technology is nothing like today's stuff.

Went out and bought an AR HC6 home theater speaker system (4 sats, center, and powered sub $329)) and a Yamaha rxv 2500 a/v receiver ($750). After lengthly experimentation, I ended up with:
Penta's for front L/R, running of their own amps, with volume control by the Yamaha.
2 BOSE's as front L/R placed outside and slighty behind the Penta's. Had to put 4 ohm resistors in line since the BOSE's are 4 ohm. Feared the worst, but didn't notice any audible sound deterioration.
the AR sats as side surround and rear surrounds, plus the center and subwoofer.

Basically it's a 7.1 sound system using 9 amps/ 9 speakers/ and a powered sub.

End Result: No comparison for movies/video with the old setup. Very impressive improvement.

For music I don't think I lost anything in the transition. I thought the Yamaha 2500 was quite flexible in allowing me to blend 4 large front speakers with 5 cube speakers. Still a big mishmash, but what the heck.

can someone tell me if i need to open this thing up and change internal fuses for the illuminated lights to work again?

I have a Pioneer 727 bought new in 1972
a Pioneer 626 plus some vintage Pioneer speakers obtianed in a thrift shop for $50 in 1993.
KLH 21 desktop FM radio
Dynaco ST 120 Amp
Dynaco PAT 5
Dynaco FM 5 all bought on Ebay recently; I built a Dynaco FM 3 tuner in 1965 and really liked that equipment.
I still have a pioneer FM/8-track unit in my 1971 Skylark Custom convertible and a Radio Shack 8-track recorder player!
I do have a new digital Denon Home Theater Receiver with surround sound but it is so complicated to use that I really appreciate the older simple units.

Newbie first post, but thought I would get my feet wet with this thread. My vintage system:

McIntosh MC40 tube amps (60's)
Sansui 1000A tube reciever used as preamp (late 60's)
Thorens TD160 turntable (early 70's)
Technics SL1300 TT (late 70's)
Altec Lansing 604-8g Model 17's

I love vintage gear, it sounds great and the prices fit my budget.

bernd, thanks for the welcome.

I have 4 cartridges, with one being vintage.

Shure III w/ VN35E
Goldring 1042
Denon 110
At 440ML

The SHure is my least fav of the bunch. I had a NOS stylus and I think it might have dried up a bit.

I have only had my 40's for about 4 months or so, but I like them very much. They were the personal amps of a very good tech here in town, and he has already told me he regrets selling them. I told him anytime he misses them he is welcome to come over and listen to them sing. What more can a guy do?

SAE MkIVCM Power amp
Pair of EPI 50s

I oscillate between a Sansui TU-9000, Pioneer TX-9500 II, and a McIntosh MR7300 for tuners in my 2 ch. setup. The Mac sound beats 'em all though. For DXing, the Sansui is best. Also use an "old" Yamaha R-900 when I'm feeling a little quirky....:6:

I have some Hi Fi vintage stuff including a mono only Heathkit preamp and power amp from early sixties. the preamp was desighned to hold a second preamp circuit board in the box for Stereo but this has just the one These are both working fine but are currently not used.
Also I have a Pioneer "steriophonic" Hi-Fi reciever SM-B201 with 19 tubes including 2 6BM8 pairs for finals. it sounds great. the plates (anodes) in the finals have a tendancy to glow red after about 20 minutes. I doubt this is a good thing. so I don't power it up often.

Just dumped my last Vintage piece Nad 7020 from active service. The amp power supply died (Blew fuses constantly) some time ago and was using it only as a tuner and Phono preamp until a few days ago when I replaced it and my old prologic stuff with a Yamaha HTR 5960
Bought the 7020 New as a teenager in the late 70's it was a great piece of gear.

Hello to all: I own a Mint SANSUI 771 and was wondering if I should sell it or put it on eBay. I have not seen many like this before. The Reciver is very Heavy, Well Built and Packs a lot of power and quality sound. I also have a SANSUI G-9000 DB but I could swear that the 771 sounded every bit as good.

I am also considering selling my PIONEER SX 8000 that sounds great and looks great. Bottom line, should I hold on to the SANSUI 771 & the PIONEER SX 8000 as collectibles, or sell them? I am trying to make room in my office, and need to thin out my collection.

Please advise,
Rocky

Please note: The SANSUI G-9000 DB is not up for sale.

*NOS '50s Mullard GZ37 rectifier
*NOS '50s RCA 6SN7GTB drivers

I got the audiophile but again in 2002 and have been doing some upgrading. But as of then my system consisted of ...

Phase Linear 400 amp, 1978 -- sold: Cdn$250
Apt Holman preamp, 1979 -- sold: US$195
Denon TU-500, 1974 -- sold: US$270
B&W DM7 speakers, 1980 -- sold Cdn$200
Audio Technica Signet cartridge, 1989 -- still around, but not in use
Technics SL-PS70 CDP, 1992 -- still around ...
Realistic LAB-2200 turntable, 1993 -- the trashman cometh!

Recently added to my system are the following vintage items:

Technics SL-D2 turntable, late '70s
Denon TU7-67, 1985I'm getting a couple of DACs for cheap, viz.

Entech 203.2, $81
Assemblage DAC 1.5 with HDCD, $174Since my old Technics SL-PS70 player was a top-of-the-line model, it will make nice transport, so I might haul it back into service with the Entech.

In the bedroom I'm using a couple of vintage items ...

NAD 7130, early '80s -- nice
Radio Shack MInimus 7 speakers, early '80s -- yuck!See my current stereo system at the link below ...

I have a mint Sansui AU417 with a Rotel 965BXLE CD player. this is fed into a set of vintage Ohm model L's and a set of Paradigm 3SE's...for low listening I have a very old Pioneer SA5500II with a Onkyo DX1800 CD player that feeds a set of JBL riva's. I have a few tube DAC's but dont really use them much...and Graddo headphones..
I would keep every piece of old gear, mostly the older int. amps. I do believe they are gonna fetch good money in the future. I know a few very hi end recording studio's that wash down a mix on old analog amps before mastering...I had a few new digital amps, and the sound was very thin next to my analog gear...

Jeff, I'm absolutely thrilled with the SL-1700MK2 and its performance. Sure, it's not a megabuck Clearaudio or VPI belt-drive 'table, but with my Stanton MM and a Sumiko Blue Point MC (that's worn and needs replacing), it does a respectable job of reproducing my 180-200 gram LPs in grand style. All I need now is a decent tube phono stage to replace the entry-level Music Hall and I'm all set!

I have a pair of Altec Lansing 887A CAPRI speakers that were made in 1974. I bought them for 5 bucks at a swapmeet, and they work perfect! The surrounds aren't rotted or anything. This is my only piece of vintage gear, but if I see anymore deals like this Ill pick up more. Here's a link to an ad featuring my speakers - http://www.lansingheritage.org/images/altec/catalogs/1974-home/page3.jpg They are the smallest ones shown, and are listed as "d" on the list.

I have a pair of Altec Valencias that were bought in 1965! I retired them to my master bedroom after I upgraded my home theater.

Unfortunately, I was not able to integrate them into the new system. Just too old, to hard to find, and too big! They are still in great condition and are still used for two channel listening.

My latest addition is a Sansui C-2101 preamplifier, circa 1984. (Is post 1980 really vintage??) I bought this at Audiogon as a backup for my Sonic Frontiers LINE 1, (which is presently at Parts Connexion for repairs). I paid $95.

I will used the Sansui as a phono preamp on an on-going basis. It has MM, MC-Low, and MC-High; I sold my Cambridge Azur 540P since I don't need it anymore.

Hi all, this is my first post in this forum!

My stuff is pretty much all vintage, which I got into a few years ago (when I started replacing the BPC system I bought in the late '80s). Right now my "collection" includes:

Main system:

Setton RS-440 receiver
Realistic STA-2080 receiver (standing in until the Setton gets its tuner realigned)
Kenwood KD-3050 TT (marble base)
Pioneer PL-510A TT - (I'm alternating between the two turntables now, but will have to decide which one's a keeper)
Akai CS-MO1A cassette deck
Harman-Kardon HD 7300 CDP
and three sets of speakers I'm rotating until I make a decision which to get rid of:
AR-2AX
Fisher XP-7B
Realistic Nova 8B

Home office:
Pioneer SX-450
Realistic Minimus 7

Office at work:
Fisher 432 receiver (quad, baby!)
Criterion 4x speakers
Onkyo CDP (7311? Don't recall)
I have a minty pair of Wharfedale W30D's and a crappy-looking but working pair of AR-4's; one of them will replace the Criterions, which were freebies and don't sound bad, but are too big for work.

I have some other random gear sitting around - Optonica 5205 receiver, Sansui 210, Sanyo Plus 75 (needing repair) - now that good weather is coming I'm planning to refinish or refurbish all my stuff, sell off or give away my excess, and make my wife happier in the process.

As you can se, my "fi" is definitely "mid", but I like my gear. Sounds way better than my old HT setup, and I like the looks of the older gear. Besides, scouring thrift shops and Craigslist I've been able to try out a lot of great gear for basically free.

Even my main CDP is kinda vintage (the HK dates from '91 or so) and this summer I'll probably upgrade to a Sony CE-595 or an Oppo 970 - I'd like to try out SACD. Anybody have experience with either of these players?

I'm curious.

I run mostly vintage, a Dual 604 TT, Hafler DH-110 pre (maybe not vintage but certainly old), a Sansui TU-217 tuner, and a Marantz 1152dc amp section pushing slightly modified DQ-10s'.

Heck the only modern unit I have is a cd/dvd player, a Philips 951-something or the other.

I have to admit, I'd sure like a remote on the pre, and a good quality cd player, maybe tubed like Justlisten2s'. Other than that, I like my sound.

Anyone?

I'm running an old Tandberg TCD 310, an enormous half-functional Sony HME-228, and a Pioneer SX-212 Stereo Reciever (which I'm having some trouble with as of a few minutes ago). Pumping out sound are two Sony SS-440's and two small EPI's, which my dad has had forever. I'm listening to old Chuck Mangione/Spyro Gyra 8-tracks. It sounds great.:D

That's a nice setup. My bandmates and I used 60's Klipsch's (not sure of the year) but are no longer allowed to use them due to our crime of borrowing our bassist's dad's Hammond B3 when he was taking a vacation in the Adirondacks. Bad move.

We have an old house with 22 rooms -- I keep 4 systems going all vintage --down thru the years- I have found some neat stuff pretty cheap -- I move stuff around -- right now syst 1. Dahquist DQ10s -- with a Linn Kairn pre-amp (wow) and a Carver amp -- a Yamaha CD1 is inthis system -- (wow but it is the most finicky thing I own) Syst 2. Marantz receiver Sansui Speaker wit the old wooden grills (cool) Syst 3 ( a lexicon surropund system). JBL 4311s -- crown 3000A -- old sanyo plus pre amp -- lexicon original 5 channel surround processor --sansui receiver for rear channels --polk R25i for surrounds Yamaha AVC to power center channel -- Polk CS101s -- BTW this hodge podge surround system really rocks -- syst 4. another surround -- Carver 880 Receiver ( neat) - Norman Labs Towers for front -- Carver rears and center -- this is a neat system -- I use these electronics to test speakers -- I currently have a couple of Klipsch Heresys hooked up to another Carver amp in the same room -- it is a stupid room -- it is only about 12x12 -- I have about 15 sets of speakers in there and lots of stuff just laying around -- my wife hates it -- but it is every boys dream -- some of it is pretty cheap but some is nice --- oh well the last new piece I bought new other than CD and DVD players was a Yamaha AV1000 integrated amp ( I think it was their first DSP unit) that was about 20 years ago --things have away of moving around and to my wife's dismay -- I bring something old home just about every week -- last week -- a pair of Phase Tech 60 speaker and a really bad pair of AR 3As -- this is fun

My stereo system equipment is:

- Marantz 1070 Amp
- Priboi (Russian) Tube Amp
- Technics SU-V650 Amp
- Onkyo DX-7711 CD Player
- Onkyo DX-6850 CD Player
- Thorens TD145 MKII Turntable
- KLH Five Speakers

Marantz, Thorens and KLH were new when I bought them in the seventies, the others were used (and cheap!) later buys. You probably can't call the CD Players "Vintage" but they certainly are robust.

I got a vintage first generation Koestu Black. Sum***** still plays, too, and a Marcof battery powered MC step up transformer that I batteryed up just this past weekend but, regrettably, it remained silent. Think I'm gonna look into that. Got some Kenwood L07 monoblocks from the seventies that I use to drive my stereo set up with TV. Also have an original Counterpoint SA-5 pre amp boxed up cause it needs repair. That's not an oldy as much as it is probably rare.

Hello, all!

Nice to see a lot of good ole' vintage stuff here...I was beginning to think those of us who love the old stuff were S.O.L.!

I started collecting my Silver Series equipment whilst stationed in England with the USAF in the late '70s. Started with a pair of Pioneer HPM 1100s, coupled with a SPEC-4 power amp and SPEC-1 pre, with a PLL-600 turntable sporting a then-megabuck (almost as much as the turntable at the time: $212) Audio-Technica cartridge - never saw the need for a Linn or other more esoteric turntable, especially as I deployed a LOT.

Later on (MUCH later, as in last year), I added in the RG-7 and RG-9 processors in with my DBX 128 and caught good deals on a mint RG-707 RTR and an equally-mint CTF-1000 cassette deck.

I've also added on a pair of early -90's vintage Magnaplanar SMGs and a pair of Klipsch Quartets, which I use in my garage workroom.

Am in hopes that I'll be able to afford having the SPEC-1&2 completely re-vamped by a firm in New York soon, and follow that up with a vintage Pioneer CD P-70 CD deck to finish my 'set,' as the Philips CD recorder is fine, but doesn't match the rest of the setup.

Finally, while the HPM 1100s rock, I DO love the Apogee/Carver and higher-end Maggies, as they have much better high-end response than my older SMGs. That'd be my one condescension to 'vintage'- a pair of newer speakers for general listening to replace the older Maggies.
I may have to lose both the Klipsch AND the Maggies in the process, but hey, I want the higher-end freq response the SMGs just can't give...c'est la vie for those who like the older stuff, eh?

I have a Pioneer component setup from the early '80's - all made in Japan, but with black fronts. SA-1270 stereo amp, PL-570 turntable, TX-970 tuner, CT-1170W double cassette deck, CS-D9000 speakers and a 1991 6-CD player - PD-M453. I don't remember what it cost when I bought it, but it was really something! Still plays and looks good as new since no one touched it except me. Any idea what it's all worth today?

I have an old mid 1970's Technics 40wpc integrated amp along with a Hitachi tuner. Also have an old 1980 Yamaha A400 integrated amp. The Technics was and still is a great amp. It was well made and weighs a ton and could crank out the power. It still sounds great. The Yamaha amp is also 40wpc but weighs about 5lbs and is junk.

Thanks.
I had an entry level Technics table back in the early 80's that I loved so hopefully this will work as well. It had a European plug but after getting an adapter I powered it up it seems fine. Can not tell the type of stylus it has but it looks to be an Audiotechna. Will hook it up and see what happens.

I can understand why. I was absolutely blown away litening to GAS equipment for the first time. I would think many owners are still listening to their gear and haven't bothered upgrading. You are going to have a hard time getting a beter sound than you have with that gear. what's your listening preference? What is your source gear?

Thank you for that daviethek!! I just had two people on another thread tell me i need to upgrade my amp if I want to run Magnepans..... I personally agree with you sir! GAS amps with Maggies are magical..... let them drop 8K on a reference amp that doesnt sound much better at all..

My source at this moment is very sad. I need to get a nice turntable. I am ashamed to say but I never got a nice transport or cd player when i built the system. So those are two items on the wish list.........

Musically, I listen to a very odd type of music... although Supertramp "Crime of the Century" sounds great on my stereo..... there is a cd from Nine inch Nails called "pretty hate machine" and you wouldnt believe the crystal clear quality of that cd...So to answer your question I like more modern music such as Dandy Warhols and Fugazi etc.....Regardless I love the sound of anything I put on my Maggies........ I am a younger guy that grew up with my Dad using GAS equipment so its in my blood...... I know when I get my new 3.6 Magnepans I will definitely get a nice turntable and play some great jazz music! What are you running on your system???

Still running Dad's old Realistic Lab-400 (Radio Shack...so probably made by a big brand manufacturer in the 70's). Have the tape deck around (also Realistic 70's vintage...Dad was a Radio Shack fanatic) somewhere too...though it's not hooked up at this point. Ran my Advent Prodigy's running until about a year ago when the hubby got me Cerwin Vega's CVHD 5.1 system. The Advents needed woofer repair, so I fixed them and gave them to a family member...hope he appreciates them as much as I did.

Actually, speaking of Dad, think he's still running a beast of a receiver/amp from Realistic and speakers from the 70's too. Looking forward to maybe acquiring those someday! I can set up his full system again...in my house!

The thing is a real workhorse. I bought it at a flea market twelve years --ago it think for $30 It tunes better and much better sound than a newer Sony digital tuner I tried to replace it with. (I ended up giving the Sony away.)

I too built an FM 5 from kit these many years ago. As I recall, I kept it until I bought the Denon TU-500, (below), in '79. Undoubtedly the Denon was better.

About a year ago I sold the TU-500 and bougth a semi-vintage TU-767. The latter is not better, but I paid 1/4 the price I got selling former

Yes, the TU-750 is fairly rare. The drum-type tuning dial is unusual, as are the meters. They can measure power either from the tuner or an external device; the left one doubles as a signal strength at the flip of a switch. Note the outputs for an osciliscope. The back looks like this:

My guess is that that 304/504 were from the same line but that does not neccessarily mean that they were "matched" by design. I have a 5150 and the pre-amp that came with it was a 3150, it looks like it was a rack system and 50 was how Onkyo designated the components in that system. Very nice gear indeed! Who's to say where the dividing line is for qualifying as "vintage", but I use 25 years as a rough guide. I vividly remember when the Levinson JC-2 preamp arrived in '75 or so. I loved its form factor and modeled my DIY attenuator box after it.

http://www.marklev.com/JC2/img/mljc2.jpghttp://home.cablelynx.com/~rhw/audio/se2.jpg

I was the happy owner of Acoustats for nearly thirty years before replacing them with the Sound Labs. It was the 2+2 that I owned for the longest time - between 1982 and 2005. I had a seamstress make new socks for them out of spandex which is both visually and acoustically more transparent. Unlike the original burlap type cloth, you could easily see the panel grid behind them just like the current U-1s.

http://home.cablelynx.com/~rhw/audio/spandex.jpg

The Medallion Red transformers were wired with Monster cable which had oxidized horribly over time (and added a decided "edge" to the sound). I rewired them and bypassed the fuses which removed yet another veil.

Hello,

This is my first post. I was wondering what you all thought was TOO old for a set of vintage once excellent rated speakers. I've been hunting around for a set of B & W 's for a while and have seen some DM640 made in 1990 and Matrix 803s from 1990. They 'look' fine but what do you have to worry about with older speakers? Do they get tired sounding? I know about woofer cone failure if foam or paper, but what about rubber, polyprop...etc.? What about the coils/magnets/crossovers...etc.?

Any advise would be welcome!

Thanks,

Tim

I wanted to share my newly completed vintage Onkyo system. I am quite proud of her...and she sounds fantastic:

Onkyo P-306 RS preamp
Onkyo T-9090 tuner
Onkyo DX-C606 cd carousel
Onkyo EQ 35...(TWO)
Onkyo M504 amp
Onkyo M508 amp
Marantz T-1080 turntable
Cerwin Vega D-9 speakers...(FOUR)

The 306 pre- has dual outputs, each feeding an eq, in turn feeding an amp, in turn feeding a pair of D-9's......and it's heaven!! for me. The EQ's tweaked the CV'S quite well.....removing the harshness from the tweeters, and passifying the mids just enough....and the bass??.....well they ARE D-9'S!!

My first post should consist of what I own so, here it is:
I have a Technics Professional Series rack system that I bought while in the Air Force stationed in W. Germany. I bought these components and one of the Micro Series systems during 1978-79 along with the Technics speakers. Everything else was purchased in the USA. I'll post pics when I figure out how to do that.

Main System:
Technics SH-9010 EQ
Technics SH-9020 Meter Unit
Technics ST-9030 Tuner
Technics SE-9060 Amp (2)
Technics SU-9070 Pre-Amp
Technics RS-1700 Open Reel
Technics RS-M85 Cassette Deck
Technics RS-M88 Cassette Deck
Technics RS-9900US Cassette Deck (2)
Technics SH-3041 Step-Up Transformer (3)
Technics SL-1310MKII Turntable
Technics ST-905 Audio Rack
Klipsch Klipschorns Loudspeakers
Klipsch La Scala's Loudspeakers
dBX 3BX Range Expansion
dBX Model 224 Noise Reduction
dBX Model 200 Routing Box

Secondary Systems: Both are Technics Micro Series Systems (2 ea of everything listed except the speakers)
Technics SE-C01 Amp
Technics SH-C01 Power Supply
Technics SU-C01 Pre-Amp
Technics ST-C04 Tuner
Technics M02 Cassette Deck
Technics SL-10 Turntable
Technics SB-E100 Loudspeakers, Klipsch Cornwalls (1st System)
Klipsch La Scala's, Klipsch KG-2's (2nd System)

I also have a Technics ST-9038 Tuner and SH-9038 Micom Programmable Processor that are sitting idle at the moment.

I'm sure nobody noticed but, I do like Technics and Klipsch. :D

Hi Guys,

I just joined this forum, looking at your systems I guess i'm in the right place! I like it loud and clear and I like to feel the depth of the music that just doesn't happen with todays equiptment.

Thanks for all the photos guys. I especially liked pustelniakr's Pioneer setup with the triple speaker stack.

My living room system is powered by a Pioneer SX-1080 through Cerwin-Vega AT-15's I bought about 15 years ago. I literally had to reglue the cabinets once, but they are holding up great.

Check out the 'MarketPlace' forum; you'd post under 'Receivers' since there is no vintage category.

1st time post: Only vintage I'm listening to these days are my HPM-100s. I've got tons of it laying around, including a Technics SA5760 which needs some work. I keep threatening to go through it; but the damn thing is too big/heavy to fit on my workbench. I just recently gifted my son with a Heathkit AR-1500a which I couldn't figure out how to integrate into what I'm listening to today: a fairly new-ish Kenwood surround receiver (KR7400?), late model DVD player, 80's Hitachi TT, Technics 3-head cassette. I'm using a set of baby ARs for center channel and a pair of modified KLHs for rears. Sometimes I switch on my KLH Sixteens when I want a break from the Pioneers...much less 'up-front' sounding.

My son traded my his Realistic STA 2280 for the Heathkit. It needs recapping, as the sound deteriorates after an hour or so. I might go through that one soon....

Interesting to me that there are so many old electronics out there that are still working fine. I built a Dynaco 35 in '71 for $99 although I wanted the Marantz 2275 (flipping burgers on weekends would not cut it) but over the years the little woman took over the shopping and I didn't care, so we wound up with Costco crap that broke apart slowly because it was always made of plastic and then CD's showed up and then MP3's and it was all very tedious. But this year I decided to replace the stereo I had to throw out last year (because it was plastic and broke apart) and to my surprise I discovered nobody manufactures stereos anymore. The home theatre stuff confused the hell out of me, because I couldn't see any controls anywhere. The Sony stereos that looked like stereos were actually 5 to 10 watts RMS per channel but rated at 100 watts Total Power (which probably refers to the alternating current Power you must apply to the unit in order to ignite it Totally) and were clearly just toys. So, I looked up the used stereo equipment being sold locally, and, lo and behold, there was that Marantz 2275 just a-sitting there, still waiting for me after all those years. Cheap, too. And everything else was cheap... the Pioneer SG-9800 12x12 equalizer, the Marantz 5220 tape deck, the Altec Lanzing 3's, and of course the obligatory Dual turntable which a lot of us seem to wind up with, and in a nod to progress a not-so-vintage NAD 5100 CD player. It's a real stereo. Sounds like one, too. I'd forgotten how good music sounded at home with a real stereo. And, I can use knobs and dials and buttons to make it work. Not confused anymore. Now... got to see what I can do about the telephone and the stove.

Way to go, luddite, with your new old stereo system, and enjoy it.

The fact is that really stereo still does exist though you won't find it at Costco.

By the way, back in '71 I built a Dynaco Stereo 80, a PAT-4 preamp, and FM-5. I often wonder how my hifi history would have differed it I'd gone for the Stereo 70 and PAS-3, (both tube), instead.

Good stereo equipment at reasonable prices is available every day on the online auction sites. The nice thing about the auction format is that prices are set based on supply and demand. If you don't over-pay for something people continue to want, such as the Marantz 22 series receivers, you can sell it for as much as you paid.

Vintage..? Everything is relative, anyway here goes..
Ariston RD80SL, with Linn Basik Plus arm, A&R P77 m/m, as I only play cd for a long time now, this is for sale, a new motor from Ariston was fitted ten years ago, I have hardly used this turntable since, rich, detailed sound.
NAD 3150, wonderful integrated amp that drives my friend's 4 ohm Mission Argonauts EASILY, I will audition Naim's new Nait XS back to back with the NAD and make 'the decision'..!
Mission 770 Freedoms, STUNNING advancement over my previous Mission 737R (also now for sale!) I intend keeping the 770F forever, they are just back from Mission service and so musical, the timing, detail, I could go on!
Source at the moment is a new Cambridge Audio 640C v2, Naim CD5i likely to be the next move.. all advice gratefully received as to the way forward!

The only new piece in the system is a Sony SCD-C2000ES 5 disc SACD player that is awesome. Also I just purchased a pair of Bose 10.2 tower speakers circa late 80's that I also enjoy greatly. Just acquired another "vintage" amp: Krell KRS-2
Had to replace twenty or more German ERO caps that dried out, two of the switches and the wirewound Spectrol pot withe a plastic conductive type.
There's also another box attached - not visible - that contains four torodials that feed the kprs-2 powersupply beneath the KRS-2 main unit.
Stereophile tested it in 1987 (Vol 11, No. 4)

I have a pair of old Criterion 4X speakers that I just yanked out of storage. I wanted to hook these up to hear how they still sound. I can not find the old manual. I noticed that there is a red dot above one of the speaker connections. Is this for the + connection from the amp or the negative? I sure don't remember. Perhaps it is not important. However, the Technics amp manual did mention not to cross the leads to avoid damage to the circuitry. I am new to this forum.

02audionoob
07-11-2009, 01:08 PM
Cross the leads would be having them touch each other. Connecting them to a speaker with them reversed still presents an acceptable load for the amp and doesn't harm it. Red is sort of universal language for + in my experience.

Welcome to AR Forums, TheTvricky, (and thank you for your patience). :14:

The KEF 105 is a famous speaker, though perhaps the later version, (105A?), is better known. Ckeck out Audiokarma (http://www.audiokarma.org/) where there are many vintage owners some of whoum might give you the best advice about the KEF's.

Personally I've always admired the Marantz receivers of that vintage; I owned a 2252B for a while. If you have convincing evidence of ownership of the Akai by Aretha, (that is, a "provenance"), it could be worth some money.

thekid

Welcome to AR TV!

I think you will have to give the Marantz a good work out with the KEF's. The KEF's can take some power but I do not know if it is needed to produce quality sound. The Marantz if typical will sound/act a little stronger than its 38wpc rating but it will depend a bit on the volume level and music played. The Pioneer is I believe 30wpc and while good I would say the Marantz is your best bet.

Anyone?

Pete
Most vintage I have has been slowly updated ,but I still pull it out on occasion.SME 1800 equalizer,Revox b-77 reel to reel,Technics M-75 cassette deck, but presently I use my KLH/Burwen TNE-7000A,for removing minor ticks and pops in my vinyl. An amazing little device for sure, even after 31 years!!

H/K PM655 integrated amp, 60 wpc (circa 1985: 24 years old). Fantastic amp that makes my B/W 684's sing! I'm looking to upgrade as I've got my eyes set on a used pair of 800 series B/W's.

H/K PM655 integrated amp, 60 wpc (circa 1985: 24 years old). Fantastic amp that makes my B/W 684's sing! I'm looking to upgrade as I've got my eyes set on a used pair of 800 series B/W's.

Nice gear!
I have come across several of those TX series Onkyo's but they were priced a bit high. Like their looks though.

Only real vintage piece is my Pioneer PL-514 TT, and I'm still lovin' it.
I have a pair of Allison AL-115 speakers (not exactly vintage, but old), but they need to be refoamed, so not using them right now.

Dude, what are you doing man ? If you are going to collect Kenwood components, you can do much better than BPC. Look for pieces like the Kenwood C-2 preamp, Basic M2A amp, KA-9100 integrated, KA-7002, etc. Those are the really good Kenwood components you should be collecting. Love the good stuff. No disrespect intended, my comments are with the best of intentions.

I see you got the best stuff but I am not a collector and I do it just like hobby. I am not that much into it like collecting stuff and getting rear receivers.

You have 5 Kenwood pieces and you're thinking of getting two more. I would call that being a collector. :D

I would second Glen B suggestions to anyone who does tend to favor Kenwood gear. It is not always one of the brands that have a high rep among audiophiles but the silverface gear and the Basic series are good performers that can run with alot of gear at 4 and 5 times the price point.

Looks great, I see in your later post you plan to run some JBL L100. Nice choice, I have a set of L110. Personally I love them and use them in my listening room right now.

Just curious. How do your TT's stabilize sitting atop those speakers? No sonic interference or do you just have them there for looks? Just curious, not trying to burst your bubble.

Looks totally awesome!! I could never get away with that much power in my house. Thanks for sharing man...

Here's a great site for "audiophile" tunes. Been buying my vinyl and some supplies from these guys. Excellent shipping rates. It looks like they have just over 3000 SACD titles right now. Is that enough?

Thanks everybody, Both TT are hooked up and running, no problems at all. And thank you for the link, great site. More than enough titles for me, I will give em a try.The macs are only rated at 50 w.p.c., but tested out at 68 and 72 respectively. When running horns, you better have the cleanest source you can find, or those horns will let you know it immediately. 50 w.p.c. of clean power is more than enough to make the votts come to life, and they get LOUDDDDD

Thanks again, I run the JBL L-100s and PIONEER HPM-100 on a KENWOOD KR-9600. To my ears, they are real good match on the big kenwood. I have both pairs tuned to where you couldnt tell them apart if you close your eyes.

Man it looks like your room is pretty filled with gear. Most of it looks like its before my time in this hobby but thats not a bad thing since the 70's produced some good pieces of equipment. the only truly older piece in my system is a Adcom 545 series 2 power amp from the eary 90's and a pair of highly modified Paradigm monitor 7's from the mid 90's. thats about as old as my system goes but what the hey I figured I would throw my 2 cents in the pot as well since it seems like everyone else has. Good idea for a thread though. Lots of responses.

Nice speakers!
As I understand the general practice of stacking the top speaker should be inverted in part to create more separation between the large woofers. You might want to give that a try and see if you notice a difference in SQ.

Thanks again, some of this gear is almost as old as me. The mcintosh preamp mx-110 is from 1965, tubes. The last tube preamp mcintosh made. The amp, a mcintosh 2505, is the first ss amps that they made, designed to sound like tubes. The 2nd system also mcintosh a mx-115 preamp of which there were less than 1,100 made. powered by a mcintosh mc-250, a no frills version of the 2505. All hooked to old Altec speakers, that have been rebuilt. Too bad they dont build stuff like this anymore.
