IMO, you can get really good performance from older analog tuners. As far as sound quality goes, the tuner is the best bargain in audio. (You can probably get 3 or more good used tuners for $300.) Finding a used tuner is fairly easy once you know what to look for. I settled on a Yamaha T-1 - depth and width of the soundstage and smoothness of high frequencies are involving and non-fatiguing. The DX'ing feature is good for picking up weak stations. A good muting circuit gets rid of noise when you're tuning the dial between stations. The trick is finding FM stations that don't use compression. Here's a link with tons of info:

As far as newer tuners go, I've read good things about the Marantz ST6000. The Cambridge Audio T500 is $279 and comes in black or silver. Some of the newer tuners from Rotel, Yamaha and others come with a remote.

I'm not necessarily endorsing these online sellers, but I have bought from audio advisor and sound city with no problems. If you go with a refurbished unit, get all the details of the manufacturer's warranty that applies and you might check to see whether the online seller performs or helps with warranty service. Happy hunting!

I use an NAD 4020A which can be had on eBay for around $50

With a good antenna, it becomes a very good piece of equipment

You cannot go wrong looking for a Yamaha TX 1000. A fantastic Tuner. One of the best that was made. No longer in production but you may find one used on Ebay. It is a solid well built great performing, great looking unit with absolutely solid specs and looks to go with all the performance. Mine is about 18 years old and I still have not found one I like more. I purchased mine at the PX for a cheap 245.00. They go for about 300 to 500 now.
