Now that I have my Dual changer up and running well, my buying addiction is encompassing 78s. Like I needed that. Anyway, my latest find were at a thrift store stop over the weekend that yielded 5 albums with about a dozen records each and 20 singles discs, all 78s, mostly western swing, Spade Cooley, Bob Wills, Tex Ritter, Earnest Tubb, etc... Been having a ton of fun slapping stacks of them on the changer. Gotta get to cleanin' 'em up soon so I can get a better listen without all the dirt and grime in those old grooves. The whole collection looks pretty darn nice condition wise though. The discs look in really nice shape underneath a layer of dirt, not all scratched up or anything. I did leave behind a couple stacks of square dance records and an album full of Doris Day and Dinah Shore records though.

    Hello guys,
I am new to audio review. Does any one have a used Nitty Gritty 1.5fi for sale? I have about 18 crates of my dad's old vinyl records to be clean. If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'd recommend the KAB EV-1 at KAB ELECTRO ACOUSTICS if you're looking for a record cleaning machine on a tight budget.

    Yes!!!
Well it seems I am listening to less and less vinyl these days, but maybe this score will help solve that problem. Apologies about the shoddy pic. The Clark Terry - "Swinging" was still sealed. I am most excited about the Ruby Braff, it's my first LP of his.

-Ruby Braff - Swinging w/ Ruby Braff
-Clark Terry/Bob Brookemyer Quintet - What'd He Say? / The Power Of Positive Swinging
    -The Best Of Basie (Roullette)
-Art Tatum and Co. - Tatum Group Masterpisece
-Hubert Laws - The Chicago Theme
    - Various Artists - I Giganti Del Jazz
-The Greatest Of Stan Getz (Roost...original!!)
-The Jonah Jones Quartet - Swingin Around The World

Poppa nice score!!! How is that Hubert Laws record; I have always wondered? You have been absent from the vinyl zone? Life is getting in the way, huh? That Tatum looks like it is on Pablo, which is an under appreciated label.

I have been buying a lot more cd's because I got a cheap PS1 and I have scored a lot of dollar cds that were finds in the thrift stores. I think cds will be the new treasure finds second hand because everyone is dumping them for mp3s.

I have been buying a lot of records in the last year and gear as well (good grief).

Maybe, the count for the last year has been 150 lps.

Here in L.A. there is a roaming swap meet in the various cities that comprise the greater Los Angeles area every weekend. The one near me in Pasadena is on the first Sunday of every month. I save my money each month for it and I will post about it with some pictures after the next one in a couple of weeks.

Here are some of the suprise hits for me, most are thrift store finds, with a little store and swap meet scores:

Here is the funniest score at GW for $2 a piece

JBL Speaker and Sure cartridge test records:

    http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6115/...913ceda8a4.jpg

I bought these at the same time i bought this Sony SACD player for $25. I think these were all from the same Audiophile:

    http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6004/...0a78fd5f_m.jpg

Here are some thrift store classical finds $1 please:

    http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6233/...4db72bbb3b.jpg

Some rock thrift store finds 1 - 2 $$. I really was surprised how much I liked the Fleetwood. I really like Dave Edmunds an Madness. AC/DC= nuff said:

    http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6041/...d37be4a3dd.jpg

Dollar albums that pretty good (the white Marcus Roberts is actually exceptional):

    http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6043/...36121c7a75.jpg

These were albums that were purchased at the stores or swap meet that were priced cheap and I don't know why, they are considered the seminal albums by these musicians:

    http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6100/...9251ec62f9.jpg

I will post pics of the swap meet and some of the finds after the first Sunday of November. This swap meet is the best in the large L.A. area, it is a local tradition.

That was when they had Kenny Clark...the original MJQ. Good score it seems...how does it sound?

I like Connie Kay more so than Kenny Clark though....but that's just me. I thought Kay was smoother ...and I love the stuff Connie Kay did with Paul Desmond.

That MJQ record is amazingly quiet. Unbelievable. And just leaps out of the speakers. Sounds beautiful. There's a 2nd one I might have to go back and get. With the coupon and tax it's $7.78, brand new and sealed.

What year was that MJQ recorded? I think Kenny Clark was only with them for their first two or three recordings before he moved on. Late 50's or early 60's,

That one says it was "recorded between 1952 and 1954". Rather than pick up the 2nd one like it, I decided to go with a used copy of this:

I think this comment sounds about right, they were both great with different approaches. Kay was a better fit for what MJQ were doing. Klook moved to Europe and recorded with the best of the best out there.

02 that Pyramid LP has been sitting on a shelf of a shop I go to for some time now. Should I buy it? I'm not the biggest fan but I enjoy them from time to time.

Anyhow guys my comp has been down for a couple weeks now, I am posting from my Blackberry. Also, my wife's father passed away so things have been crazy here at home. Sorry I have been so elusive.

No comp means vinyl all day long now. Been listening to lots of Basie lately. Keep em spinning!

It's not blowing me away. I'm just exploring. I've never owned any of their records and those re-issues at Half-Price Books never fail me. I liked that re-issue so well I thought I'd grab another. But then frenchmon mentioned a preference for Connie Kay over Kenny Clarke in MJQ, so I changed to a different album. In hindsight, it turned out well.

I noticed in an earlier post that you had an Atlantic Jazz comp record. How is it? Is that a collection of sessions produced by the great Tom Dowd? His Atlantic productions are suppposed to be technically beautiful. I will look for that one.

I have been doing great scoring classical vinyl at various Goodwill and St. Vincent De Paul. I love a lot of Classical music and when you find it used, its usually in pretty good shape. I also hit Jerry's in Pittsburgh. He has roughly one million classical and turntables throughout the store for test spinning. What a place. when you
enter the store there are stacks and stacks of local collections he buys sight unseen. My wife gets sick in there from the mold and dust of the many millions of records. I could live there.
    Cheers to all vinyl hounds.

I have an aching back that keeps me at home a lot. Playing records is good therapy for me.

SPEAKING on the MJQ, i suggest strongly that y'all get a listen to 'blues on bach'. truly great stuff and if you have a setup that reaches into the sonic basement, it will bring much satisfaction.

Sold off a couple boxes of CDs and traded for a pretty big stack of vinyl, a few replacing CD versions. Can't remember them all, but I think this is most of 'em:

    El Rego et Ses Commandos
    Alternative Funk : Folie Distinguée
    J. Mascics: Several Shades of Why
    James Brown: Soul on Top
Raveonettes: In and Out of Control
Little Anthony & the Impreials: S/T
Jimmy Smith: The Sermon (replacing my trashed copy)
    Billie Holiday: Recital
    White Stripes: De Stijl
    AFCGT: S/T
    James Blake: S/T
    Amy Winehouse: Back in Black
Nicolas Jaar: Space is Only Noise
Los Lobos: And a Time to Dance
    Washed Out: Within and Without
Galaxie 500: This is Our Music
    Klark Kent: S/T
    Kraftwerk: Computer World
    Stan Ridgeway: The Big Heat
    DJ Spooky: Riddim Warfare
    Sonic Youth Bad Moon Rising

A couple others that I forget off hand, but I am certainly enjoying this little haul. Biggest single record shopping day, especially in terms of shiny new vinyl, that I've had for a long time, probably 3-4 years.

I like the James Blake. Have been listening to a download for a while and wanted to check out the vinyl sound and it's quite nice. I'm really not a huge fan of his vocals and am more interested in the music on that album, especially the bass. The vocals don't distract me too much, but they're not at all the draw for me. And actually the first time I heard it I was listening on tiny laptop speakers and thought the whole thing was rather boring until I heard it on a bigger setup where you could get into the bass on there. I honestly prefer Mount Kimbie, a group that works with a very similar collection of sounds and that big bass rumble but has a lot of instrumental tracks. They've actually done a bit of work together as well with both remixing each other's stuff.

Anyone looking for some fun vinyl should check out Thai Funk Volumes 1 & 2 on the Light in the Attic label. Just p[icked them both up. Both are 2 LP sets and they each are very well pressed and come is special hand sewn cloth covers. The fidelity isn't anything special because of ewhat they contain but they are well done.

They are both collections of funk, soul and disco from Thailand in the 70s and 80s. A mix of covers and originals. All really fun stuff.

    Here's a picture of Volume 1 and it's cover:

Speaking of buying vinyl... if you are a reggae fan and have not visited Ernie B's reggae online, you need to check it out. Enormous selection of reggae vinyl, both new and used including a ton of great reissues of classic albums cheap (such as the more recent Studio One reissues for 6.99 & 8.99) as well as original rare Jamaican records priced quite a bit higher but fairly. Best selection and prices on reggae I have found by far. Saturday afternoon, the following arrived at my house:

Dennis Brown: No Man is an Island
    The Best of Don Drummond
    Treasure Island in Dub
Lee Perry: Return of the Super Ape (Been listening to Super Ape for years, about time to finally get around to the squeal)

4 Lee's Gold 10" 45s - which were all on sale for like 2 bucks each and feature people like Cornell Campbell, Johnny Clarke, Freddie McGregor, IRoy, and more with King Tubby, Tappa Zukie and others throwing on several dub versions. Each disk has 6 songs, three per side and it's a lot of great material

Ernie B use to come into the shop I worked at years ago and pick up the reggae 45's we sold. He was a cool guy for sure; chill and unpretentious. He's got the life with his reggae tunes over in Long Beach.

Funny thing about those 45's: 25% of them had pot-holes and the labels off center because the guys were most likely blunted :) We bought from small labels nothing from Island records or the like.

    Nice score!!

Yeah, I've had some bad luck with exactly those issues when buying Jamaican pressings. I've seen a few documentaries on record making in Jamaica and more than a few of those shops pressing records look a bit less than as tidy as one would hope, including press operators grabbing records with one hand all over the grooves while toking on something held in the other.

Back in the day I loved listening to Jug and Dex together as dueling partners, and I always thought there was something special and nice about the way Taylor swings that ride cymbal. But even to this day, Jug is over looked as a giant by Jazz fans. This guy was looked up to by many who are more famous than he. If you wondered where some of the greats got their "soul Jazz style" of playing from, look no further than Jug....in Jazz fokelore Jug started it.

what about ME? i returned an LP to Freak Beat Records for credit because both sides were pressed with side one.

THEN i spent an additional nine bucks (before tax) on dollar records. some good finds here too:

michael franks with crossfire-LIVE--this is pretty rare as i have NEVER seen one.

    andreas vollenweider-caverna magica-promo

    stravinsky-pulcinella ste/apollon musagete-dutout and english chamber orch-MHS

boulez conducts ravel's daphnis et chloe-sq quad.

bouulez conducts stravinsky's firebird and bartok's music for strings, percussion, and celeste

    eddie gomez/john ambercrombie/jack dejohnette/lester bowie-new directions-ecm

    lambert/hendricks/bavan-at newport '63

boulez conducts stravinsky's petrushka-this is the quinessential petrushka for me. the perormance is second to none.

    solti/chicago orch-symmphonie fantastique

carmen mcrae and kenny clarke/francy boland big band-november girl

the way out voices of lambert/hedricks/ross with the ike isaacs trio

and the best (IMNSHO) nancy wilson album-this mother's daughter-mostly for ONE song-stay tuned. this song knocks me out with the lyrics: "do it to me slow"!!! good gravy, what great lyrics.
