    Recommend YAMAHA
I was in the same situation you are in choosing a new receiver. I looked at every receiver in that price range and decided on the YAMAHA RX-V1400. I was upgrading from a YAMAHA RX-V800. First of all, I am not telling you not to buy the ONKYO. Ultimately, for me, it came down to number of inputs and surround sound capabilities. The YAMAHA was the only one with the number of inputs(analog) I needed, and I utilized every one of them. Secondly, if I was going to upgrade, I wanted all the latest surround formats available. If you notice, the ONKYO does not offer DD PRO LOGIC IIx which will make a 7.1 mix out of any input. The YAMAHA also has the most thorough speaker setting options, allowing you to set individual distance, delay, level, and EQ of EACH speaker. It all comes down to the details: inputs, outputs, set-up options, sound quality, looks, remote control, etc. I suggest you read every last bit of information on these receivers before deciding. Good luck.
