New Cooling Fan for Pioneer Elite SP-99D

    All,

I have a question regarding a piece of equipment I have. The piece in question is a Pioneer Elite SP-99D digital processor/preamp. I am using in my HT setup to decode the Dolby Digital signal for my 5.1 HT setup. I inherited the equipment from a family member and seemed to work fine.

The problem is the cooling fan inside the unit. The pre-pro needs a 60mm 24v DC fan. The stock fan was failing, so I ordered a similar fan online and it works fine except that it emits a very audible whine, it is not silent at all. It is so bad that it takes away from the enjoyment of listening to the movies we watch. I ordered this fan from BuyExtras.com.

The SP-99D is about ten years old, so Pioneer no longer has any fans in stock. Does anyone know where I can get a fan that fits (60mm x 60mm x 25mm – 24vDC) and is quiet? Or maybe there is some mod I can do to slow the fan down to make it quiter?

    Thanks,

    George

You could try finding one at www.newegg.com in the computer hardware section. I saw one that was the right dimensions but it was a 12 volt case fan.

Check out EndPCNoise.com. They specialize in cooling fans with ultra-low noise. You may be able to find something suitable. You can use a suitably sized resistor or 12V voltage regulator to drop the pre-pro's 24V supply to the 12V the fan requires.

See my response in the Tweaks section. BTW, double-posting is frowned upon in most forums. .
