Best power amp for under $600?

I want to add a power amp to my current system (Onkyo TX-SR701 a/v rec, Angstrom Modular 2,4,8's and 6C centre cahnnel). I was looking at used but I'd feel more comfortable with new. I was looking at the NAD C-270 which is $800(CDN) incl. taxes. Any comments on this amp or would you recommend something else?

The the C270 is now discontinued, replaced by the C272. If you look around you might be able to get the C270 at a good discount as I did.

By the way, the C270 replaced an ancient Phase Linear 400 in my system. My Phase needed repairs but it wasn't worth it given the C370 sounds better (to my ears).

Your best amp for $600 or less is definitely going to be a used one. If you're looking solid state, I think you can get a 2 year old amp for half or less of the original MSRP. With a 20 year lifespan, that's a pretty good chunk of money that you're saving. In your case, you might get a decent 2 ch. amp and use the receiver's amp section to power the center and surrounds.

Threshold Stasis series are great amps (from the time when Nelson Pass was at Threshold) and many can be had for under $600, e.g. Threshold S-150
