Which amplifier goes with Bose 301 V speakers?

Hi all,

I was looking for new speakers to use with my computer, as I recently moved. Before, I used a Sony all-in-one system with fairly decent speakers in stead of a typical small speaker set for PCs. Now, since the speakers of the Sony system didn't provide good sound anymore (as I played them often too loud when I was younger), I chose not to take them when I moved. This brought me to the point where I had to choose a new set of speakers for my pc.

As I wanted a similar audio experience and not some crappy sound from too small pc-speakers, I thought about the alternatives. As I knew of an old Pioneer stereo amplifier being around in the house (SA-7300), I figured I could use that and buy two bookshelf speakers.

At a big local store, I listened to different speakers which would fit into the space I have available (literally) on my bookshelf and I ended up with liking the Bose 301s most, also considering the price. So I bought them and went home.

When I tried to set the amplifier and the speakers up and connect them to my pc... nothing happened except for some very low sound and cracking noises in one of the speakers. So I suppose the amplifier is broke, as I connected the cables correctly.

Now my question: which amplifier would you recommend to go with these speakers, given the fact that I have a limited budget and that it would be primarily used to connect my pc to it and play mp3s (or occasionally play games)?

I did some research and heard an amplifier should have 200watts per channel at least to get a nice result? What about Ohm etc? I'm kind of a newbie...

You defintiely dont need 200wpc for those speakers. 40-50wpc wouldbe more than enough. The recommended power range is 10-150watts. If you are considering spending that kind of cash on a 200wpc amp then I would consider buying much better speakers.

I would try to get something with a warmer sound since the paper dome tweeters are bright and that would balance out their sound. And blackraven is right with the power. 100 wpc would be more than enough to power them past their ability.

You bought blose??? First I would go and return those if you can and get a pair of cheap Polk's. And on the amplifier go and look on Craigslist for some good brands. You don't need very much power at all 50 watts should be plenty with that being said you could even get a cheap receiver?

I don't think that you will be happy with those 301's stting in a book shelf. They need some space.

The 301s will do fine...they are a bookshelf speaker.

Did you make sure the speakers weren't the problem?

Bose will work just fine. I would recommend hitting ebay or amazon for a newer CD player, computer audio can be a little harsh when passed through larger speaker then the small computer speakers you are used to. Oppo DVD players work very well for CD play. Any 2ch reciever will work. An old Onkyo, Denon, HK, Pioneer ect... just don't pay to much for thses items, look for the lowest price, and make sure they work :smilewinkgrin:

IMNSHO, the 301's are the only Bose speaker I would ever consider, assuming a good price. IOW, they ain't all that bad.

As for driving them, I'd not go too crazy in the new market. Thay ain't that good.

I'd scour the thrift shops, garage sales, etc, or even epay/craigslist for a mid-line vintage two-channel receiver.
