Adcom gfp-555II anything special?

I saw an Adcom gfp-555II on CL for $125.00. This is a good price but I don't need it unless it would be a noticeable improvement over my gtp-450. And I'd have to weigh the fact I'd lose the tuner. Where the Adcom system is the tuner sometimes is handy for background. But if the 555 was better than the 450 for sound quality I'd make the trade.

This might not help since I have not heard the GTP-450, but I owned an original GFP-555 and I liked it very well. I finally couldn't stand the hiss, especially in the phono stage, so I moved up to the GFP-565. Much of the same hiss was there with it, too. I ultimately decided I liked the 565 well enough to tolerate the hiss and would've done the same with the 555 if I'd known the 565 wasn't going to be dead quiet, either.

BUT...I guess one tell-tale sign is that after all that I still have my Basic C2 and both the Adcom pre's have been sold.

I saw a C2 and M2 with a tuner on CL for $249.00 I was so tempted to get it at that deal but I don't really need all the extra gear.

it certainly doesnt live up to the rave review it got in stereophile years ago. i bought the pair gfp565/gfa555II. the amp is a better value by far. pair it with a good tubed preamp like an sp6 or 9 and you will have top notch sound.

been there, done that. the adcom is flexible and it does sound good but really, the tubed arc will bring you into the high end. you will know upon first listen.

well, oops on the model. mine is a gfp565, a later model. still, i cannot imagine the gfp555II sounding any better than the 565 and certainly not better than the arc sp3a1(C) i put in its place.

I'm thinking of getting another SP-9 as a spare.
